The developmental process of plants in a three-dimensional(3D) space was simulated on the computer by the virtual reality, we call it virtual plants, which generates three-dimensional and visible computer model of plant individual or group. Along with the gradually integration of virtual reality technology and Internet technology, lots of virtual objects, from small products to large-scale construction zones,were displayed online, which promoted the development of related industries practically. Virtual plants technology in the Internet has not been well developed in spite of the same earnestly seeking for virtual plants online by people.The expression mechanism of simulating plant by applying L -system was researched on the basis the fractal character of plant shape. Those usual forms of L-system, such as DOL-System, stochastic 0L-system, parametric 0L-system, context-sensitive L-system and Open L-system, were discussed systematically and their expression character were analyzed respectively, which prepared a solid base for the application of L-system method to simulating plant growth.VRML is one Web-based virtual reality technology and was chosen to build 3D virtual scene,which aimed to online study of virtual plants. According to different shape of plant organization, this paper made 3D models for them with kinds of VRML shape nodes, and carried on the regular summaries of VRML plants modeling.In order to provide the 3D interactive visualization environment and to simulate the entire process of virtual plant growth, VRML technology and Java technology were adopted. The running platform was Web Page. The implementation process of realtime interaction between user and scene nodes was depicted, and A detailed discussion between External Authoring Interface and Script node was made.Finally, the paper summaried current study result and a self-evaluation of the whole work, and made outlooks of the later research.
