The Cultural Details Of Technology And Harmonious Development

In the light of the situation that technological development is an issue of global concern, the shift of emphasis to the role of science and technology in China's economical development is reflected in the strategy of invigorating China through science and technology, a strategy inspired by the recognition that science and technology are the primary productive forces. Technological development is subject to the constraint of social situation and many pragmatic issues concerning it are under the influence of cultural factors. The technological modernization in China is undertaken against the background of cultural conflicts and changes. Therefore, it must be illuminated that techonological development is not only a matter of raising the technological standards, it is inextricably connected with culture. This thesis attempts to examine technological development from the perspective of culture by investigating the cultural influences underlying technological development and the way technological development is shaped by culture so as to explore a way of effecting the harmonious co-development of technology and culture.Apart from the introduction, this thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter expounds on the definitions of techonology and culture, and the genesis and development of technological culture, in an attempt to illuminate the close relationship between technology and culture from the perspective of their definitions.The second chapter investigates the interaction between technology and culture. It will elucidate the following propositions: the determination of technological development by culture, the construction of culture by technology, and the interaction between technology and culture.The third chapter deals with the way that culture fashions technological development. It tries to illlustrate the important role played by culture in technological development, and the logical relationship between them by examining the cultural drive, cultural evaluation, cultural selection, cultural constrait of technological development.The fourth chapter focuses on the harmonious development of technology and culture. It probes into the interrelationship between technology and culture by examining the social standard and value judgment of the harmonious development of technology and culture, how exactly technology and culture integrate throughout human history, and the integration of the natural property of technology and the social attribute of culture.The fifth chapter based on the current situation of technological development in China, examines the necessity and feasibility of exploring a way to achieve the harmonious co-development of technology and culture.
