Diaoluoshan Nature Reserve in the southeast of Hainan, is located between 18°43'-18°58' N Lat. and 109°43'-110°03' E Long. It is warm and humid there with abundant rainfall. It is one of the important tropical rainforest areas which are perfectly conservated in China, and one of the ecological biodiversity centers of tropical forest in Hainan. Owing to the particular physical environment and climate the bryophytes there are very abundant. The bryoflora of Diaoluoshan Nature Reserve has, however, been poorly known. In order to investigate the liverwort and hornwort diversity of Hainan Island and Diaoluoshan Nature Reserve, a field trip was carried out in September 2005, and a total of 662 specimens were collected. According to published literature and identifications of all available specimens, the hepatic flora consists of 205 species (subspecies and varieties excluded), of which 203 taxa are liverworts belonging to 55 genera in 23 families, and two taxa are hornworts belonging to two genera in one family. Among them, three species, Bazzania horridula Schiffn., Riccardia elata (Steph.) Schiffn. and Telaranea semperiana (Steph.) Del Rosario, are newly reported for China and 29 species in six genera are new to Hainan. The character of liverwort and hornwort flora of Diaoluoshan Nature Reserve is represented by many tropical and subtropical species. Lejeuneaceae is the largest family of dominant families, containing 102 species belonging to 23 genera, accounting for 49.76% of the whole hepatic flora. The largest genus of dominant genera is Cololejeunea, with 28 species, accounting for 13.66% of the total number. Two hundred and ninety eight species of liverworts (subspecies and varieties excluded) belonging to 69 genera in 29 families, and three species of hornworts belonging to three genera in one family, are recorded in Hainan Island, based on present research and all published literature. Among them, 89 species of liverworts belonging to 23 genera in seven families are epiphyllous, representing 29.57% of all. Lejeuneaceae is the largest family in Hainan, with 134 species in 26 genera, representing 44.32% of the whole hepatic flora in this island. Cololejeunea is the largest genus, with 36 species which account for 11.96% of the whole hepatic flora. Eight endangered liverworts are present in Hainan. The hepatic flora in Hainan consists of 13 geographical elements. The tropical Asian element is the most dominant element of the local flora (115 species, 38.98%), followed by East Asiatic elements (61 species, 20.68%). These two elements constitute major portion of the Hainan flora of liverworts and hornworts. By comparisons of species similarities between the hepatic flora of Hainan and other adjacent islands (Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan), the hepatic flora of Hong Kong is closest to that of Hainan, and followed by Taiwan and Japan. In the other hand, Taiwan has the highest generic similarity with Hainan, and followed by Hong Kong and Japan. This paper provides updated checklists of the liverworts and hornworts of Diaoluoshan Nature Reserve and Hainan island. All specimens are kept in HSNU (the herbarium of East China Normal University)...
