Geomechanics is a subject that studies the regular pattern of geological structure and earth crust movement with mechanical principle. In China geomechanics that was established by Li-Siguang have developed for more than 50 years. Geomechanics is a multilaterally-linked interdisciplinary subject whose research field includes structural geology, earth physics, solid mechanics and astrogeology. The main stage of geomechanics development in china was from mid 1950's to 1978. And this period was a special period of science development because of the influence of domestic political environment. Geomechanics established by Li-Siguang developed very quickly during this period. Li-Siguang as an academic flag was publicized and popularized widely. Geomechanics reached the peak of its development during the Cultural Revolution. After the Cultural Revolution, the special political environment disappeared, and then geomechanics reverted to normal state. In the following 20 years the publications about geomechanics decreased generally, and geomechanics became an unromantic branch of science.Li-Siguang and the rise of geomechanics during a special period reflect the influence of social and cultural environment on science. This article started with the establishment of geomechanics. How didLi-Siguang become the authority of the new country? My article describes the development of geomechanics after mid 1950's, and the spread in the Cultural Revolution. It reflects the relationship between the science and the society.
