Wetlands at the Yangtze River Estuary are important staging areas for shorebirds following the Australian-Asia flyway. These areas provide energy and habitat for shorebirds in migratory seasons. And the status of these wetlands has a strong influence to whether shorebirds' migration is successful one or not. But with the drastic population and economic development near and at Yangtze River Estuary delta, more and more area is needed by human, and this will induce severe disturbance to the wetland and the shorebird inhabiting in it. And there appears a conflict between human's development and shorebirds' habitat requirement.Based the structure and function of Yangtze River Estuary Ecosystem, the energy expenditure of shorebird community staging at Yangtze River Estuary and the production of macro zoobenthos community were studied in this dissertation. And the habitat selection and habitat use of shorebirds staging at Yangtze River Estuary was studied too. Based the feeding relationship and energy flow between shorebirds and macro Zoobenthos, a model was developed to estimate the habitat requirement of shorebirds staging at Yangtze River Estuary. And the habitat requirement of shorebirds was estimated by the model. A discussion about how to wise use of wetland was conducted. From the surveys in 2000-2004,44 shorebirds species were recorded, and there is a difference between autumn and spring migration seasons. And shorebirds distributed in different areas of Yangtze River Estuary with different numbers. The Chongming Island and Jiuduan shoal distributed most shorebirds. In northern ward migration season, shorebirds stayed in Yangtze River Estuary for 29.97day in a species level mean duration with 21.42 as S.D., and 62.40day with 20.55 as S.D. in southerward migration.Habitat selection of shorebird in Yangtze River Estuary happened in all scales. In regional scale, shorebirds selected Chongming Island and Jiuduan Shoal as habitat area, though there was a lower macro Zoobenthos biomass in these areas. In spring, Chongming Island and Jiuduan Shoal had a total number of 85% of shorebirds in Yangtze River Estuary and in autumn this proportion was 80%.In Chongming Island and Jiuduan Shoal, Shorebirds preferred Algae Saline Zone as their habitat. There were 68.3% of total number of shorebird individuals watched in Yangtze River Estuary in Algae Saline Zone, and 17.7% in Outer Bulrush Zone, 11.0% in Constructed Wetland. Of all the shorebirds, there 74.5% of them feeding in Algae Saline Zone, and this was 87.6% of the total shorebirds happened in this zone. And there were 43.4% of total shorebirds rested in Algae Saline Zone and 37.4% in Constructed Wetland. In a word, shorebirds preferred Algae Saline Zone, Outer Bulrush Zone as feeding habitat and Algae Saline Zone and Constructed Wetland as resting habitat. In a small scale, shorebirds preferred the area near Water Line as habitat. 71.7% of feeding and 47.2% of resting individual happened close to water line. And this couldindicate the water had a important role in habitat selection of shorebirds. This was because the macro Zoobenthos near water line were easy to catch by shorebirds. With paired t-test, I had tested the relationship between numbers of feeding and resting individuals at the same area. And the result showed no significant relationship between individual numbers of these behaviors (P=0.0925>0.05, df=10) . Thisindicated that shorebirds selected different area perform different behavior.Based the different habitat use ways, the habitat of shorebird could be divided to two types, feeding habitat and resting habitat. And in larger and large scales, the biomass of macro zoobenthos didn't affect the habitat selection of shorebirds, but in a small scale it did. With the formula C_ind =12.19 × (W)~0729 the expenditures of shorebirds individual and community in Yangtze River Estuary were calculated during they were staging in Yangtze River Estuary. And the expenditures in spring and autumn were 7.17× 10~8KJ and 3.17×10~8KJ respectively. The production of macro Zoobenthos c...
