This thesis try to make a primary review of the conception of science in western intellectual, mainly in the UK and the USA, focus on the definition of science and the issue of scientific definition, the classification of science, the relation between religion and science, and the spirit of science. The way of inquiry is based on some classic translations, which were formally published in China and were written by the great thinker, philosopher, sociologist, scientist, or historian of science. The aim of the inquiry is to obtain some understanding of the western culture tradition with compassion and to try its best to reduce the misapprehensions in the cultural intercourse between China and the outer world.At the same time, the author also want to do some primary comparative study between the views of the Chinese intellectual and the western counterpart, such as the incline of essentialism in the teaching practice of physical definition in China, the understanding of the western contemporary philosophy of science in China, and views of the spirit of science between K.R.Popper and Wuguosheng, a famous Chinese philosopher of science.The whole work want to be regarded as a foundational inquiry in Chinese science education. The ultimate aim is to do some foundational work in the level of the conception for the Chinese science education, a growing up education research field.
