Objective to study the dose of irradiation sterilization used in specific pathogen-free (SPF) animals and the quality of irradiated forage. Methods the culture of bacteria was carried on after the forage had been irradiated 7 days with 5-5OkGy dose to determine the effective dose, then the negative groups were cultured in 30,60,90,120 and 180 days; we compared the main nutrition composition, vitamin and amino acid of the forage sterilized by autoclave and irradiation; the growth and reproduction of rats fed on the forage sterilized by autoclave and irradiation were observed. Results the culture of bacteria was position in 5-l5kGy groups, 2OkGy groups could only be preserved 30-60 days, however, 25-5OkGy groups could be kept germ-free above 120 days; the crude protein, vitamin A,B1,B2,B6 and lysine, methionine, arginine of the autoclavable forage were destroyed at different level(p<0.05).While all composition except vitamin B1 were completely preserved in irradiated group; the irradiation forage had no harmful effects on the growth and reproduction of rats, the weights of rats fed on irradiated forage increased more than those fed on autoclavable forage. Conclusion the results showed that the quality of the forage irradiated with 25kGy was better than that of autoclavable forage, and the irradiated forage should be popularized in our count...
