The experiment was conducted in Stipa brevzflora desert steppe in Sunit Right Banner of Inner Mongolia at a large scale based on family ranch from June 2000 to April 2001. In this experiment, rotational grazing(RG), continuous grazing(RG) and a check plot(CK) were settled. Vegetation response, diet quality and liveweight gain of sheep were evaluated. The main results were as follows: 1 The percentage of biomass of fine forages and IV(importance value index) were similar between RG and CK, but lower in CG, and the difference was significant. The percentage of Neopallasia pectinata and other annual forbs were significantly higher in CG than other two treatments. 2 The standing crop biomass was highest in CK during the whole growth periode. In June, it was significantly higher in RG and CK than in CO. there was no significant difference between RG and CK; in other months the difference was not significant between RG and CK. In April 2001, the ground litter was collected. The result showed that it was significantly lower in CG than in RG and CK. As far as the available forage biomass was concerned, it was similar between RG and CG except in August that it was higher in CO than RG. 3 Growing quantity in CG was significantly higher than in RG. The nutrition of vegetation declined as time going. Among the 3 treatments, the percentage of crude protein in CG varied greatly, in June and July it was higher than that in RG and CK, but declined to the lowest in October. 4 The composition plants of the sheep diet was more abundant in CO than in RG. The crude protein, crude fat of diet were higher in CG than RG. As a result, the liveweight gain per day was higher in CO than RG. Compared the liveweight gain per hm2 there was no significant difference between them. In October, the average weight was 2.05 kg higher in RG than CO.
