Previous earthquakes have shown that the water-supply-system damage which is an important component of lifelines will cause serious disasters. It is critical for relief work to keep water supply systems functional and safe after earthquakes. Thus, it is of great practical significance to launch analysis on seismic damage of water supply systems. In the 2008 Wenchuan Ms 8.0 earthquake, the water supply facilities in cities and towns were damaged to various extents, some of which were severely damaged. In Sichuan Province only, water supply systems in more than 20 cities and counties were affected. In order to understand the seismic performance of water pipelines and the seismic functional failure features of water supply systems, the seismic damage features and functional failure modes of various cities and regions in different seismic intensities are analyzed and summarized based on the survey data. The weak aspects in seismic fortification of water supply systems are discovered, and suggestions on a seismic measures and economic loss assessment methods are proposed. The following points are discussed in the thesis:1. The seismic damage features of water supply systems are introduced. Various damage modes and the main factors are concluded based on the seismic damage survey data. The seismic damage phenomena and the damage levels in different seismic intensities of pipes which are made of different materials that are commonly used in China are studied. The vulnerable parts of water pipelines under earthquake influence are also analyzed.2. Studies on the functional failure modes of water supply systems in earthquakes have been focused on. The failure modes are categorized, and the causes for each mode are stated. The countermeasure advices are proposed for vulnerable parts of the water supply systems.3. Investigation of maintenance cost of active service pipeline, and based on the analysis on damage rates of pipes of various materials in areas with various seismic intensities, an economic loss prediction and evaluation method of water supply pipelines is perfected. The method is then applied to evaluate the post-earthquake economic loss of the water supply system in Fuxin City.
