As a new viewpoint of environmental impact assessment of mine, the viewshed analysis in GIS (Geographic Information System) on visual pollution assessment is applied in this paper. The thought and technical framework of visual pollution assessment of mine using GIS is proposed and the key techniques and steps are introduced in detail. By some basic methods provided by ArcGIS, such as spatial data processing analysis, terrain analysis, distance analysis and viewshed analysis, the visual area from the bald mountain caused by mining can be calculated and visualized. Quantitative assessment of visual pollution caused by mining can be obtained when the visual area and target objects, including highways, residential areas, park, which are sensitive to visual pollution, are overlied. Finally, the feasibility of thought and technical framework is verified by taking visual pollution assessment of Nanjing as an example, and its results may provide valuable references for other relevant work. The main contents of the thesis are summarized as follows:(1) As a new viewpoint of environmental impact assessment of mine, the method of visual pollution assessment is described in this paper. Environmental impact assessments of mine's statuses at home and abroad are also summarized.(2) The thought and technical framework of visual pollution assessment of mine using GIS is proposed and the key techniques and steps are introduced in detail.(3) The feasibility of thought and technical framework is verified by taking visual pollution assessment of Nanjing as an example.(4) Designing for the basic framework of the viewshed analysis in GIS for the visual pollution assessment of mine is provided. Moreover, pollution of preliminary coping strategies for the visual pollution assessment and several meaningful advices for future exploration are presented.
