The coastal zone is in the complex geologic environment of sea-land interaction, It's very important for the human socioeconomic development. The type of geological hazards in China coastal zone is very complex, the economic loss caused is also enormous. Therefore, it's necessary to manage the information of coastal geological hazards. The management can play an important role in social development, resources planning and hazard prevention.The geographic information system (GIS) is an application system supported by the computer software and hardware, integrating the input, storage, query, calculation, display and synthetic analysis functions to the geography data. Its powerful geography data display function, the spatial database management function and the spatial analysis function have provided the powerful technical strut for the information management of coastal geological hazards."The information management system of geological hazards in China coastal zone" is a professional geological information system which achieved the saving, space analysis and evaluation, and information management of the vast geological hazards data. It is under the pecuniary aid of the program of "Investigation and research of marine geologic hazards", which is conducted by the First Institute of Oceanography, SOA. Based on the existing research, analysis and Field survey results, The system achieves the process of "data" to "information" conversion using the GIS technique, spatial data and attribute data. It is not only has theoretical significance, but also has important practical significance for the prediction and control of geological hazards.This paper describes the design and implementation process of the information management system of geological hazards in China coastal zone. Firstly, it thoroughly analyses and studies the spatial database theory, UML technology as well as the development of GIS. Then, in allusion to the trait of huge data and excessive source for coastal geological hazards, in this paper, we do some pretreatment to guarantee the data's criterion, it makes the integration, management, maintenance, distributive service and communion of data more expediently. On this basis, the paper studys how to design the spatial database and the attribute database of the information management system.The paper discusses the construct method of constructing geodatabase. And a UML model for the coastal geological hazards data is constructed using the CASE tools, which yielded out the geodatabase-based spatial database automatically. Meanwhile, we set up the attribute database with Microsoft Access. And then, the spatial database and the attribute database are combined together with the coding which are set up in the spatial data and attribute data.In the end of the paper, we adopt ArcEngine technology and VB to develop the information management system of geological hazards in China coastal zone. The main functions of this system as follows:access to the coastal geological hazards data and the input of data to the database, the display basic inquiry of spatial and attribute data, the geometric computation of maps, the display of thematic maps, the analysis of buffer zone, and output of data. The system has good stability and openness.
