According to the report of the 20 th National Congress of the Communist Party of China,we will accelerate the implementation of the innovation-driven development strategy,accelerate the realization of high-level scientific and technological self-reliance,and strengthen the role of firms in scientific and technological innovation.As pointed out in the Outline of the 14 th Five-Year Plan,we will advance the layout of future industries and actively cultivate future industries,many of which belong to science-based industries.However,there is still a big gap between our science-based industries‘ development and science-based industries‘ development in the developed countries.From the overall perspective of firms‘ technological innovation,the global market competition is becoming fierce,and fims need to constantly introduce new technologies,new products and new services.In this case,firms need to make up for their own resources through knowledge search.In the science-based industries,it is particularly important for firms to continue to search for scientific knowledge.In particular,in the era of big data,massive open scientific information outside provides conditions for firms to search for scientific knowledge.However,scanning much scientific knowledge to select applicable scientific knowledge requires a large amount of resource investment,and corresponding mechanisms should be deployed within firms to absorb and apply such knowledge.If firms do not have clear goals and plans in the implementation of scientific knowledge search and invest blindly a lot of resources and energy in the search process,firms may not achieve the expected results,waste their resources,and harm other innovative activities.However,existing studies mainly focus on the impact of technological knowledge search on the innovative performance of firms,while few studies focus on the scientific knowledge search of firms.For firms that attach importance to scientific knowledge for innovation,whether scientific knowledge search has a positive impact on innovative performance remains further studies.Searching scientific knowledge is not enough.There is no guarantee that searching scientific knowledge must create value or establish a competitive advantage.From the perspective of knowledge recombination,technological innovation is a process of technological knowledge recombination to solve technological problems.The characteristics of the firm‘s scientific knowledge search may affect technological knowledge recombination.In addition,firms often act from the perspective of innovative activities,and lack experience in the use of scientific knowledge,which may increase the chances of inappropriate use of science.And firms need to deploy complementary investment to use external resources to realize the knowledge innovation.The differences of scientific capacity could affect the impact effect of scientific knowledge search on the technological knowledge recombination.Based on these,the paper combines the knowledge base theory,knowledge search theory,recombination innovation theory and dynamic capability theory.Using the system dynamics model and econometric model,the paper explores the relationship between scientific knowledge search and innovative performance.The paper analyzes the influence path of ―scientific knowledge search-technological knowledge recombination-innovative performance‖,and the moderating role of scientific capability on the relationship between scientific knowledge search and technological knowledge recombination.The empirical study is carried out by obtaining the data of international fuel cell firms.The main contents are as follows:Firstly,the general impact routes of scientific knowledge search are discussed,including the influence of scientific knowledge search on the identification of innovative opportunities,the expansion of innovative space,the optimization of the innovative process and the training of innovative talents.Then,the system dynamics method is used to construct the dynamic affecting process of scientific knowledge search.Secondly,the direct influence mechanism of search breadth and search depth on innovative performance is analyzed respectively.Based on the data of international fuel cell firms,the empirical analysis shows that both the breadth and depth of scientific knowledge search positively affect the innovative performance of firms.Thirdly,the paper puts the knowledge recombination into the framework of the influence of scientific knowledge search on innovative performance,and expounds the mechanism of the influence of scientific knowledge search on technological knowledge recombination,including the generation of new technological knowledge,the search of new technological knowledge,and the combination opportunity of scientific reasoning.The paper studies the influence of existing technological knowledge recombination,and the old&new technological knowledge recombination on innovative performance.The mediating mechanism of technological knowledge recombination is analyzed.Based on the data of international fuel cell firms,the empirical analysis shows that both the recombination of existing technological knowledge and the recombination of old&new technological knowledge play mediating roles in the impact of scientific knowledge search breadth and depth on innovative performance.Fourthly,the paper analyzes the moderating role of scientific capability on the relationship between scientific knowledge search and technological knowledge recombination.The moderating mechanism of internal scientific capability and external scientific capability is analyzed.The empirical results show that internal scientific capability negatively moderates the relationship between scientific knowledge search breadth and existing technological knowledge recombination,but positively moderates the relationship between scientific knowledge search breadth and old&new knowledge recombination.External scientific capability positively moderates the relationship between scientific knowledge search depth and existing technological knowledge recombination,but negatively moderates the relationship between scientific knowledge search depth and old&new knowledge recombination.Fifthly,the main findings of the study are summarized and discussed.Then the paper discusses the practical implication for firms.National and indusrial policy suggestions are proposed to promote the implementation of scientific knowledge search strategy and improve the level of industrial innovation for the science-based industries.This study breaks through the limitations of previous studies on knowledge search.And the study builds a framework of the ―scientific knowledge search-technological knowledge recombination-innovative performance‖.It is a good complement research for the innovative performance framework and makes up for the previous studies of scientific knowledge search.It clarifies the intermediate mechanism of technological knowledge recombination.It is a supplement to the previous research gaps about the intermediary mechanism and improves the analysis framework of the influence of scientific knowledge search on innovative performance.The theoretical relationship between the characteristics of scientific knowledge and dynamic capabilities in the process of science-based innovation is constructed,and the theoretical explanation of the framework of ―scientific knowledge search-technological knowledge recombination‖ is deepened.The research perspective and conclusion provide a valuable reference for scie ncebased firms to use scientific knowledge to carry out innovation.
