Urbanization,an important engine for the world economic and social development and advances in human civilization,is the only path to achieve China’s modernization, and will definitely become the major theme of China’s economic and social development in the course of its national rejuvenation.China’s urbanization has been a major issue of strategic significance for China’s and the world’s economic and social development for a long time and will continue to be so in the future.Deep urbanization,by improving the functions and agglomeration effect of urban areas, driving investment in infrastructure and public products as well as the increase in employment, promoting the increase of residents’ income and the upgrade of their consumption and enhancing rural economic development and the qualities of urban-rural integration and farmers’ life, can not only dissolve the contradiction between people’s growing need for a better life and the unbalanced and insufficient development, but also contribute to the development of China’s economy by continuously unleashing the huge domestic demand potential, providing an abundant source of power for China’s high-quality economic development.Agricultural modernization is crucial for achieving the coordinated development between urban and rural areas and between industry and agriculture,as well as for the revitalization of the countryside and the sustainable development of China.Vigorously promoting the modernization of agriculture can not only break the "double squeezes" of cost and price and the "double constraints" of resources and environment, but also improve agricultural industry and its development quality, operation efficiency and its capacity of sustainable development,so as to meet the requirements of balanced development between quantity, quality, efficiency, ecology and safety. It is also an important path to tackle the outstanding "weak areas" of China’s modernization under the new normal and the inevitable choice for solving the issues of the massive flow of rural labor and the structural decline in their quality in the process of deep urbanization, and to promote farmers’ expanding roles in urbanization, which in turn will help the development of deep urbanization.Drawing on the theories of "dual economy",population migration, traditional agricultural transformation, system science and the "core-edge" theory, this paper has studied the connotation, status quo, existing problems, working mechanisms, measurement criteria and realization path of coupled and coordinated development between deep urbanization and agricultural modernization, put forward an analytical framework consisting of social and spatial mechanisms and mechanisms of government, market, industry and population flow, and explained the working mechanism of their coupled and coordinated development based on the laws of population structure evolution, production factor flow under the conditions of market economy, and industrial structure optimization and change, and the government control and guidance incentive mechanism, the fair allocation effect of public products, and the radiation and aggregation function of cities, etc. It has also established a monocentric linear city model and made a rigorous theoretical inference on the influencing factors of population flow and its working mechanism.A comprehensive evaluation index system of deep urbanization and agricultural modernization has been set up and their development levels in 30 provinces and municipalities(excluding Hong Kong,Macao,Taiwan and Tibetan areas)in China from2005 to 2019 have been measured and analyzed to illustrate their history and characteristics at different stages of development.Models have been established to measure the level of their coupled and coordinated development and the coupling effect, and the strength of their coupling in China has been statistically described and analyzed. The influencing factors and working mechanisms of their coupled and coordinated development have been empirically analyze with the use of the spatial autocorrelation analysis and spatial econometric model, and their realization path has been proposed in terms of industrial upgrading, efficient and equal allocation of public products(services),spatial structure optimization, and free flow of urban and rural production factors,so as to truly realize their mutual help and promotion, and finally realize urban and rural high-quality integration. The coupling between deep urbanization and agricultural modernization is outstanding and strong. The varying degrees of their coupling and coordination in China have shown a stepwise change across regions, revealing significant spatial correlation and imbalance;in the process of spatial and temporal evolution, agricultural modernization in a growing number of provinces and urban areas have lagged behind deep urbanization, far from reaching their benign interaction with a high degree of coupling and coordination. This has not only hindered the progress of deep urbanization and the overall social and economic development, but also will seriously delay China’s modernization of agriculture and rural areas and even the whole modernization process. It is necessary to find out the main influencing factors and truly realize their coupling and coordination with high efficiency and quality by creating a good ecology, giving full play to the role of government guidance and support and the driving forces of human capital, economic, educational and medical development,so as to provide a strong support for achieving the common prosperity of urban and rural areas and to better meet people’s growing need for a better life.
