When ancient Indian culture was introduced to Southeast Asia along with trade activities,Buddhism and Buddhist art were also introduced.From about the 1st century,a series of emerging kingdoms emerged in the Indochina Peninsula and the Malay Archipelago,including Pyu in Myanmar,Champa in central Vietnam,Dvaravati in Thailand,and Srivijaya in Indonesia.The development can be regarded as the beginning of Southeast Asian culture,and the local Buddhist relics have also become the witness of cultural exchanges between India,Southeast Asia and China.This dissertation takes the remains of Buddhist statues in five major regions of Southeast Asia before the 9th century as the research object,and uses the research methods of stylistics and iconography to analyze the style evolution of statues in different regions and at different stages.The main content of this article includes the following four aspects.Firstly,clarify the initial transmission of Buddhism in Southeast Asia,and infer the time and method of Buddhism in Southeast Asia by referring to ancient books and Buddhist scriptures in Sri Lanka;Relevant records of the development of Buddhism illustrate the rise and development of Buddhism in Southeast Asia.Secondly,after collecting as comprehensive a sample of representative statues in Southeast Asia as possible,the styles and details of statues in different regions are explained,including Thailand’s Dvaravati style statues,Cambodia’s Angkor Borei style statues,and Vietnam’s Dong duong style statues.Through the analysis of the faces,mudra,and garment styles of the statues,etc.,the commonness and individual characteristics of the statues in different regions are discussed.Thirdly,trace the style of Buddhist statues in Southeast Asia,and analyze the influence of different genres of ancient Indian statues on the appearance of Buddhist statues in Southeast Asia by comparing the statues of Sarnath,Amaravati and Nagarjunakonda in ancient India.At last,pay attention to the cultural exchanges between India,Southeast Asia and China,as well as the exchange and dissemination of Buddhism,and clarify the importance of the sea route in the development of Buddhism in Southeast Asia.
