The key understanding of the different transformations in the development of traditional Chinese painting is an important topic for art historiography. The interpretive work on the history of painting can be broadly summarized into two aspects, one focusing on the influence of external structural forces of society on the transformation of painting history, and the other on the influence of the self-generated forces of the internal structure of painting on the transformation of painting style.Since the painter is both a person in the society to which he belongs and a subject of emotional will, his behavior is subject to the action of both internal and external structures.Concepts reflect both the external structural forces of society and the internal structural forces of painters.Understanding the changes in painting history from the perspective of idea history can strike a balance between society and individuals, external and internal, and provide a reasonable basis for explaining the transformation of painting history.Traditional idea history research considers the selection and context of ideas from a subjective perspective, which is limited by the researcher’s academic vision and prone to selective bias. The keyword approach inherits traditional idea history, considering that ideas are precipitated in keywords. The basic unit of research is not books and characters, but sentences in books containing a certain keyword, which provides the possibility of absorbing digital technology. Keywords can be automatically identified by the sentence in which they are found, and keyword contexts can be illustrated by other lexical items in the sentence, providing empirical preparation for traditional idea historical research with great objectivity in the results.Humanities scholars interpret the results of digital computation humanistically from their own domain knowledge and close reading experience, and discover the logical purpose behind the ideas, which constitutes the operational thinking of digital humanities. The digital humanities method serves as an auxiliary tool, and the research itself returns to its humanistic roots. In this paper, this method is introduced to art history research, aiming to provide a methodological perspective to form a digital humanities practice from idea selection → idea evolution → painting history analysis, deepening the keyword method.First,a semi-supervised learning method is used to identify idea lexical items present in Chinese painting theory sentences in order to compensate for the subjective bias and limits of word selection in artificial painting theory dictionaries.Secondly, using Chinese painting theory sentences as contextual units, word embedding models and co-word networks are employed to detect the meaning evolution of ideas. Then, the preference of ancient painters for the idea of painting theory is traced from the relationship of quotations. Finally, the social, ideological, and cultural mechanisms behind the evolution of ideas are deciphered to understand the reasons for the transformation of painting methods, painting styles, and painting techniques. This paper expands the research horizon of Chinese painting theory and provides an interdisciplinary communication platform and new research tools for the construction of a new liberal arts in art history.
