| The avant-garde novel rose in China in the eighties,ushered in glory in the mid-to-late eighties,and carried out the artistic exploration and practice of literature in the three dimensions of narrative revolution,language experiment and survival state,from the perspective of literary history,avant-garde novel realized the reversal of the previous revolutionary realist literary aesthetics,began the reform of literary concepts,the consciousness of language and the comprehensive innovation of narrative mode,which is one of the most important literary achievements of literature in the eighties.But after a brief period of glory,entering the nineties,the pioneers and practitioners of the avant-garde novel underwent a transformation,turning to realistic narratives,and began to coincide with the aesthetics of the commercial era,and the avant-garde wave suddenly disappeared.The decline of the avant-garde novel in the nineties became a remarkable phenomenon in the history of literature,which caused great controversy at the time and is still being discussed today.The controversy about the decline of the avant-garde novel of the nineties mainly focuses on two points,one is whether the avant-garde has disappeared,whether the avant-garde can be concluded that it has ended,and the other is what kind of changes it has produced if the avant-garde has not disappeared,and which of the novels of the nineties were influenced by avant-garde literature and became the successor of avant-garde literature in the eighties.This thesis is based on a holistic combing of the novels of the nineties,and attempts to respond to the pioneer problems of the nineties.Some novels in the nineties accepted the literary heritage of the avant-garde novels of the eighties,and at the same time learned the lessons of the avant-garde of the eighties that emphasized form and light content,which eventually led to readers’ fatigue and the fading of their literary life,and carried out a certain organic combination of the stylistic experiment of the avant-garde novels of the eighties with the content writing of reality.It has evolved from a stylistic experiment into a real practical narrative tool.This paper sorts out several literary genres from the novels of the nineties,identifies the novel genres with strong avant-garde character,and sorts out the parts that inherit the avant-garde spirit and how to deal with the connection between the avant-garde and the current literary context by textual analysis.The first chapter of this article discusses the concept of the avant-garde and the overall overview of the nineties novel.The controversy over the existence and end of the pioneer is partly due to the inconsistency of the definition of "pioneer" in the academic circles,especially before the cultural event "Commemorating the Thirty Years of Avant-garde Literature" in 2015,many scholars believed that avant-garde fiction was equivalent to experimental fiction,and thus concluded that the avant-garde had ended,even after the cultural event "Commemorating the Thirty Years of Avant-garde Literature" in 2015,the understanding and interpretation of the avant-garde were still different.The first chapter of this article attempts to give the pioneer a relatively clear concept and the characteristics of the pioneer factor,and at the same time provide a macroscopic overview of the overall situation of Chinese novels in the nineties.This paper believes that from the perspective of the development of Chinese and Western literary history,the avant-garde novel itself contains formal experimental novels,but it is not completely formal experimental novels,and it is somewhat one-sided to define whether a literary work is avant-garde only by the form or style of creation,and whether the creative subject has its own independent discourse space in the spirit of art,and whether its creative object is avant-garde in combination with the cultural and historical context at the time of creation.If a literary work is avant-garde,it should have four qualities: rebellion,deconstruction(destruction),fluidity and modernity,and by combing the situation of novels in the nineties,we can analyze the categories of novels with avant-garde character in the nineties and the avant-garde qualities in them.Chapters 2,3,4,5,and 6 deal with three different schools of fiction and their avant-garde qualities.From a macro point of view,the novels of the nineties can be divided into three types,historical novels,"new generation" novels and women’s novels,among which the "new historical novels" in historical novels,most of the novels in the new generation of writers and the emerging female writer groups in the nineties are pioneering.The aesthetic construction of historical space,the historical concept far from the mainstream,the stylistic experiment of continuous exploration,the enlightenment consciousness of modernity,and the re-speaking with historical fiction and another perspective of observation in the new historical novel reflect a distinct avant-garde character.The "new generation" group of writers shows a distinct postmodernist spiritual consciousness,cultural rebellion,profound writing of the emerging artistic symbol of the city,and inherits the avant-garde narrative practice at the level of textual narrative,and embodies the spirit of the avant-garde.Among the masses of female writers,the emerging group of female writers who began to exert their strength in the 90 s has a pioneering artistic personality with their counter-mainstream gender discourse and the spirit of exploration of women’s narrative art.Although the avant-garde novels of the nineties did not present the obvious formal representation of the avant-garde novels of the eighties,their resistance to the mainstream system,the exploration of revolution and innovation of the existing literary system,the free spirit of modernity and the transcendent concern of literature are still possessed,and the avant-garde,as a fluid artistic quality,changes the rules and inertia of the past,Exploring new possibilities is the greatest significance of avant-garde fiction. |
