A Study Of The Twelve-tone Technique In Schnittke's Composition

Alfred Schnittke’s twelve-tone technique is extremely "inclusive",and he breaks our traditional views on the opposing relations between "tonal" and "atonal","strict" and "free",and "sense" and "sensibility".He is open to all,inclusive,bold and unique.In his hands,the twelve-tone technique can be either a highly rational creative technique,or a sentimental and lyrical musical expression means.This paper always took Schnittke’s twelve-tone technique as the main line of research,from material,procedure and structure of the three angles,analyzed Schnittke’s application situation of twelve-tone technique in different periods,genres and works.Finally,the paper has made a comprehensive and objective summary of his twelve-tone technique.Meanwhile,it outlines the various forms,evolvement process and creative thoughts of his 12-note style creation from the outside to the inside,point to surface.The thesis consists of an introduction,six chapters and a conclusion:The introduction part mainly introduces the origin,value,research methods,research scope and research status of this paper,as well as Schnittke’s life creation;The first chapter divides Schnittke’s twelve notes into two genres according to the overall style—strict and free;The second chapter mainly describes the logic of pitch organization and structure of pitch.The third chapter and the fourth chapter respectively make a detailed study on the change and development of the material and the texture and presentation of the sound;Chapter five is mainly about the musical structure and form of twelve-tone works;On the basis of summing up the whole paper,the sixth chapter highly summarizes the basic characteristics of the composer’s twelve-tone technique;The conclusion mainly reveals the general route of the composer’s twelve-tone style evolution,disscusses the enlightenment of the composer’s twelve-tone techniques to contemporary music creation.
