Founded by Shanghai Commercial Press in 1915,Women’s Magazine is a comprehensive commercial periodical that lasted for 17 years,which was the longest time in the history of Women’s Magazines.Besides,it covers the widest range and has a pretty large circulation.Going through the New Culture Movement,the May 4thMovement,and the National Revolution,this journal records the development of the Chinese modern ideological revolution in a unique way and becomes a window to study female’s situation,female liberation and development at that time.As one of the most valuable historical records that can be used to study female social life and problems they faced during the Republic of China era,this journal has been regarded as the most important reference in the research area of modern social history.Though scholars have discussed its development and social influence from different perspectives,there is still short of further research on women’s education reflected in it,such as methods,perspectives and ranges.From the perspective of women’s education shown in this journal,this paper studies traditional ideological and cultural education,scientific enlightenment and vocational education,gender equality education,early childhood education and female image education by combing editing,writers and contents.Based on the above finding,this paper analyzes women’s education ideology and female values,as well as its influence on women and society at that time.This paper mainly includes the following parts:The introduction introduces and briefly analyzes the background of the topic;summarizing present studies;explicating research ideology,method,innovation and definitions of relevant concepts.Focusing on the establishment and operation status of Women’s Magazine,Chapter 1 sorts and investigates the positioning of the main editors and the journal,readers and actual operation,analyzes the operation theories,features and its social influence of Women’s Magazine of different periods to reflect this journal’s connotation on other Women’s Magazines at that time.Targeting at the traditional female’s ideological and cultural education proposed in this journal,Chapter 2 researches and investigates specific questions related on this aspect,such as the education of Chinese language,classics and primary education,traditional education and moral education,traditional literature and art education to know more about the basic attitudes and viewpoints of this journal on traditional female ideological and cultural education.Further researches on the traditional female ideological and cultural education proposed in this journal and the mainstream traditional ideological and cultural education in society finds out that the two aspects have similarities and differences in terms of the connotation,aim and content of education.Therefore,this paper tries to explain that the bias towards traditional female cultural education is attributed to the expectation and discrimination towards females in a patriarchal society.Chapter 3 first studies this journal’s enlightenment of science for women of different periods in terms of the number of articles,the openness of content and the personnel change of this periodical office,then sorts out the basic attitudes and views towards enlightenment of science for women of this journal and summarizes its function in transforming female traditional worldview and advancing female employment.Next,this chapter investigates female vocational education in Modern China and finds out that there are three opinions in terms of female vocational education reflected in this journal,respectively are encouraging females to seek vocational education,opposing them to find employment and exploring the reason behind.This indicates that the journal holds an open and inclusive opinion towards female vocational education,which makes the society pay more attention to females and understand female vocational education more,and further promotes female liberation.In addition,this chapter makes an initial discussion of the dissemination of scientific enlightenment and vocational education in China during the Republic of China era and its role in the transformation of Chinese female ideology.Chapter 4 traces the development of the transformation of the education ideology from“No Talent is Virtuous”to“Gender Equality”,discusses the complex relationship between the journal and the awakening of female subjective consciousness,analyzes problems related to gender equality focused by this journal in different periods to know more about the journal’s basic attitudes and opinions towards this.It turned out that the journal acknowledges and advocates gender equality,proposing to cultivate female basic survival skills,knowledge,independent personality,social responsibility and sense of responsibility through providing females and males with equal education,which is conducive to promote the transform and renovation of the society and public’s education ideology on the one hand,and is advantageous to advance the progress and improvement of the governmental education system.Through tracing the development of the transition from old-fashioned family education to newly family education,Chapter 5 realize that new family education is necessary to shape qualified people in the new era,which is the important approach for Chinese progressive intellectuals to seek salvation and survival.This chapter investigates the questions related to female education and family education of children this journal had paid attention to in different periods,such as family education,course education and sports education,in such a way to analyze the journal’s basic attitudes and views towards new family education.From the public view,it’s discerned that this journal’s discussion about the family education of children in the new-historical era represents its recognition towards women’s maternal duty,as well as the advocating and publicizing of new education values among women,and the basic tone is progressive and inclusive.Starting from the visual images of females shown in covers of this journal in different periods,Chapter 6 analyzes the journal’s proposal of female image education through digging into female makeup,clothes,shoes,hair.In other words,it upholds to transit to the breaking up of the original doctrine of virtuous wife and good mother from the initial conservative female images and advocates more liberation and progress of the education on female education.This reflects modern Chinese society urban female style,body intention,social aesthetic culture and helps people to know more about the history on the occurrence mechanism of multi-dimensional female image.This chapter further indicates that the education of female images in this journal is the result of the mixing of power,women’s rights,western culture and fashion elements,which focuses on the changes of women’s thoughts,social life and social status.Based on the comprehensive investigation and analysis,this paper summarizes the features of the ideologies of Women’s Journal and explains the historical positioning,meaning and function of female education reflected in this journal in the activity of female liberation.It’s believed that this journal constantly constructs the self-cognition of modern women on the basis of practicability,contemporaneity,openness to internalize this into female consciousness,shape independent personality,and enhance women s cultural accomplishment and personal ability,then to advance Chinese female’s liberation through women’s self-liberation.In that historical condition,it’s more than an exploratory road for female’s liberation.
