Drawing on social identity theory, this study clarifies the origin of ethical issues in dance literature translation(DLT):dance literature translators’ choice for their social group identity. The dance literature translators’ identification with their social group determines their translation discourse structuring, and their translation discourses also reflect their identity as dancers;therefore, dance literature translators should focus on their identity.Under this framework, this study investigates the process in which dance literature translators structure their translation discourses as dancers from the micro level of the text analysis and the macro level of the context of Dancology, aiming to propose the structuring of translation ethics practiced by dance literature translators, which is centered on the dimension of identity.Since the "cultural turn",translation studies(TS)have been expanded to the description of translation processes, concentrating on the intersubjectivity in translation and the objective orientation of translators based on their options in the relational network of translation.Constrained by political, economic, cultural, and other social factors, translators form judgments following their values and physical requirements from translation reality to guide their translation practices. Therefore, translational behaviors manifest the characteristics of moral philosophy, and translators are the moral subject. When conducting DLT,the translator and the original author establish a relationship through the intermediary, the dance literature. In the light of dance aesthetics and intersemiotic translation theory, this study summarizes the characteristics of dancing language:dynamic, having rhyme, and aesthetic. The essence of the written form of dancing language recorded in dance literature through embodiment makes it clear that dance literature translators’ social group identity is the presumption of the translation practice in this specialized field.Morally, dance literature translators should examine their social group identity or ensure the required embodiment acquisition ability.Adopting the chronological classification for dance literature translators in the dance community according to their mentoring relationships, this study explores the common characteristics of their translational behaviors in different periods.Their immersion in dance, judged from their educational backgrounds and career trajectories, objectively guarantees their embodiment acquisition ability and academic attainments in dance, which determines the quality of their translation products. When coordinating interpersonal relationships with various translation subjects, the dance literature translators structure their translation discourses centered on their identity as dancers. The task of ethical research in DLT is to analyze the mechanism of translation ethics in translational behaviors,i.e.,how to structure the translation discourses centered on the identity as dancers. In the applied translation ethics studies, researchers have gradually shifted their focus from the ethics of translation activities to the ethics of the translation industry, undertaking the task of defining translation ethics, establishing ethical principles for the translation industry, and structuring translation ethics.Nevertheless, the current research findings are insufficient to structure the general translation ethics for less concern for specialized translation studies. This study appeals to DLT practitioners to structure their translation discourses centered on the identity as dancers. It proposes the structuring of translation ethics by dance literature translators, which is centered on the dimension of identity, including the dimensions of thinking mode, culture, personal development, and morality,to serve the DLT practice. The Chinese translation of dance literature facilitates the growth of foreign dance studies, enriches the connotation of Dancology, promotes the Chinese dance career, and contributes to the structuring of Chinese dance discourse. The study of dance literature translators conforms to the "cultural confidence" strategy proposed by General Secretary Xi Jinping.Chinese dancers actively spread Chinese dance culture through direct means of artistic communication. Some dancers and professional translators take up the English translation of dance literature.Due to the realistic demand of DLT in the dance field and the particularity of DLT,DLT practitioners should enhance their awareness of comprehensive quality improvement. The complicacy of translation activities and the dynamic nature of translation ethics shape the interaction and the dialectical relationship between prescriptive and descriptive studies in translation ethics studies. In a specific social and historical context, the interweaving of translator’s subjectivity and objective translation facts makes it inconceivable for any preset translation ethical model to solve the ethical problems in translation completely.Only the translation rules and characteristics summarized from the existing translation activities can be of practical significance. This study takes translation ethics as a tool kit to explore the translational behaviors, focusing on the description of characteristics and the exploration of historical events in DLT.It is conceived that the representation of historical events will extend our respect for the translators, which can not only enrich the content of Chinese translation history studies, but also contributes to the historical studies in dance.Based on intersemiotic translation theory and dance aesthetics, this study expounds on the characteristics of dance literature, which is of fundamental significance to the study of dance literature translator’s translation competence and the translator cultivation. In future research, the researcher will improve her integrative application of multidisciplinary theories to complete the structuring of translation ethics practiced by dance literature translators.Limited by her proficiency in foreign languages, the researcher confines her argumentation in the English-Chinese and Chinese-English translation practices. So,she should strengthen her foreign language proficiency and conduct her research with varied multilingual examples from a holistic perspective. |
