The development of new energy vehicles provides new opportunities for reducing the consumption of fossil fuel and the pressure environmental protection.Although the penetration rate of new energy vehicles continues to increase,it is mainly concentrated in first tier cities and new first tier cities. The adoption rate of new energy vehicles in second, third and fourth and below tier cities still needs to be improved.Significant disparities in economic income, ideological perspectives, and environmental awareness among residents in China’s diverse city level necessitate an exploration of heterogeneous driving mechanisms behind their adoption intentions, and propose targeted nudge suggestions.Consequently, this thesis investigates the distinctions in resident characteristics among city level, delves into the driving mechanisms underpinning their new energy vehicle adoption intentions, and conducts empirical analyses on this issue. It simulates the effects of nudge strategies on residents’ adoption intention and ultimately proposes nudge suggestions to improve new energy vehicle adoption intentions across China’s different level city. This thesis will contribute to the improvement the balanced diffusion of new energy vehicles in different level cities, further improve the penetration rate of new energy vehicles, and reduce fossil fuels consumption and alleviate environmental pollution pressure. This thesis first adopts qualitative analysis to innovatively propose a fourdimensional structure of residents’ adoption intention on new energy vehicle, including adoption intention for economic values, adoption intention for functional preference, adoption intention for policy promotion and adoption intention for eco-environment protection.Subsequently,it delves into the crucial driving factors of new energy vehicle adoption intention, conceiving a theoretical model for the driving mechanisms behind residents’ new energy vehicle adoption intentions across different level city.Utilizing questionnaire survey data and the Structural Equation Model, this thesis performs empirical analyses on the key driving factors for residents’ new energy vehicle adoption intentions in cities of different level city.Ultimately, founded on theoretical and empirical research, this thesis employs the weighted small-world network theory to construct a diffusion model for new energy vehicle adoption intention. Thus, this thesis proposed nudge suggestions for improving residents’ adoption intention on new energy vehicles in different level city. The research contents and findings are as follows:(1)Residents’ new energy vehicles adoption intentions display significant variations across different level city with distinct types of adoption intentions prevalent in each tier.Adoption intention for policy promotion driven dominate in first tier, new first tier, and second tier cities.Adoption intention for functional preference prevail in third tier cities, while adoption intention for Eco-environmental protection is predominant in fourth and below tier cities.(2)Demographic characteristics contribute to differences in residents’ adoption intentions for new energy vehicles across different level city.Notable disparities in new energy vehicle adoption intentions arise in first tier cities regarding age, housing type, vehicle types and occupation;in new first tier cities concerning age, education background and family housing types;in second tier cities with respect to age, education background, family monthly income, housing type, occupation, family members, number of children, number of vehicles, and vehicle types;in third tier cities concerning driving license, family members, number of children, number of vehicles, vehicle type, and housing type;and in fourth and below tier cities regarding marital status, education background, family monthly income, family housing types, occupation, family members, number of children, number of vehicles, and vehicle type.Among all tier cities, there are the most direct drivers that have a significant impact on residents’ adoption intention on new energy vehicles in first tier cities. The policy incentive has the strongest direct impact on residents’ adoption intention on new energy vehicles in first tier cities, with an impact coefficient of 8.654;the conformity personality has a greater impact on adoption intention on new energy vehicles in new first tier cities, with an impact coefficient of 3.833;and residents’ adoption intention on new energy vehicles in second tier cities is more.Environmental cognition responsibility has the strongest positive contribution to residents’ adoption intention on new energy vehicles in second tier cities, with an impact coefficient of 8.611;The perception need in third tier cities has the strongest positive influence on residents’ adoption intention on new energy vehicles, with an influence coefficient of 4.926;the policy incentive has a moderating effect on residents’ adoption intention on new energy vehicles only in fourth and below tier cities.(3)Based on the weighted small-world network, this study sets the diffusion selection methods for the adoption intention of new energy vehicles according to different diffusion strategies as follows: random mode, proximity mode, and difference mode.In the “random relationship strength” network, the diffusion rate of first and second tier cities residents’ adoption intention of new energy vehicles is the highest under the random mode;the diffusion rate of residents in fourth and below tier cities is the highest under the proximity mode;the equilibrium of the adoption intention network for new energy vehicles among residents in first, second, and fourth and below tier cities is the best under the difference mode.In the “weak relationship” and “strong relationship” networks, compared with the other two modes, the disseminator determined by the random mode in first, second, and fourth and below tier cities can bring a higher growth rate of adoption intention, but the equilibrium of the adoption intention network for new energy vehicles among residents in first, second, and fourth and below tier cities is the best under the difference mode. After adding situational factor interventions, the adoption intention of new energy vehicles among residents in different level cities is affected by multiple factors, with ups and downs.Compared with the "weak relationship" network, the adoption intention of new energy vehicles among residents in first, second, and fourth and below tier cities is more affected by situational factors intervention in the "strong relationship" network.(4)Based on the aforementioned research findings, this study proposes targeted nudge suggestions for enhancing the adoption intention of new energy vehicles among residents in different level city and puts forward comprehensive suggestions from the perspectives of residents(focusing on strengthening the environmental and social attributes of new energy vehicles, and strengthening the environmental responsibility awareness of the whole society),enterprises(focusing on enhancing brand value, reducing the cost of adoption for consumers, and improving product quality and aftersales service),and governments(raising the industry entry threshold, regulating industry standards, promoting R&D innovation, providing financial support, tax incentives and financial services, promoting inter-city connectivity, and strengthening industry chain management and used vehicle market supervision)to improve the overall adoption intention of new energy vehicles, providing holistic recommendations for promoting the diffusion of new energy vehicles. The innovation of this thesis is mainly reflected in the four-dimensional definition of the motivation types of new energy vehicle adoption intention, the construction of a differential theoretical model for the driving mechanism of new energy vehicle adoption intention among residents in different level city, revealing the diffusion patterns of new energy vehicle adoption intention among residents in different level city under the intervention strategies of different situational factors, and proposing targeted nudge suggestions for the heterogeneity of new energy vehicle adoption intention among residents in different level city. This research contributes to enhancing the adoption intention of new energy vehicles among residents in different level city in China, promoting the balanced diffusion of new energy vehicles in different level city, and expanding the existing theories on innovation diffusion related to new energy vehicle adoption from the perspective of spatial heterogeneity. There are 137 figures,71 tables and 299 references in the thesis.
