Manufacturing agglomeration has the advantages of giving full play to regional economic potential, forming economies of scale and enhancing industrial competitiveness. As one of the focuses of economic research, the existing researches on manufacturing agglomeration mainly focus on the industrial factors, spatial factors and government factors, but less on the social factors.Since the reform and opening up,Chinese society has realized rapid changes, such as social structure?interpersonal network and values have all undergone qualitative changes. These factors are characterized by changes in the level of regional social capital accumulation, but its effect on the manufacturing industry agglomeration has not been fully studied. Therefore, this paper recards the influence of social capital on manufacturing agglomeration as the research topic, following the logical thinking of "theoretical research--empirical research--policy research",taking the realistic characteristics of China's social capital distribution as the starting point and the promotion of manufacturing agglomeration as the foothold. At last,we provides a new research perspective and thinking on how to realize manufacturing agglomeration and the coordinated development between regions. On the basis of in-depth analysis of the influence of social capital's capital attribute and informal institutional attribute on manufacturing agglomeration,we combines social capital with the FCVL model in new economic geography, constructing a mathematical model of social capital influencing manufacturing agglomeration to explore the micro mechanism of social capital influencing manufacturing agglomeration from the perspective of input-output correlation.Secondly, this paper constructs the index system of social capital from the perspective of subjective form(cognitive social capital)and objective form(structural social capital)of social capital to measure the level of social capital in Chinese provinces from 2004 to 2017.Among them, cognitive social capital includes trust consciousness ? mutual assistance consciousness?cooperation consciousness and rule consciousness, and structural social capital includes individual network and organizational network. Finally,a variety of empirical analysis methods such as fixed effect model, mediating effect regression model, ordinary least squares regression, quantile regression and so on were used to test the impact of social capital on the overall agglomeration of manufacturing industry and input-output collaborative agglomeration among manufacturing industry segments.Through the above research,we obtained the following conclusion:(1)Social capital shows a trend of gradual rise, and it is fast in the east and middle regions but slow in the west regions;it is more in the east and west regions butless in the middle. Both cognitive social capital and structural social capital show an upward trend, but the structural social capital is faster in the west and middle regions and slowwer in the east. The spatial distribution of cognitive social capital has changed from more in the west and less in the minddle and east in 2004 to more in the east and less in the west in 2017.The manufacturing industry cluster shows a trend of gradual decline,at the same time,it has the characteristics of falling in the east, rising in the middle and west regions, and the middle regions faster than in the west. The traditional manufacturing agglomeration has the same changing characteristics, but the high-end manufacturing agglomeration in the western region shows a downward trend.(2)Social capital can significantly promote the formation of the overall agglomeration of manufacturing industry.Invention patent and utility model patent are important mechanisms for social capital to promote the agglomeration of manufacturing industry.Social capital can not only promote high-end manufacturing industry but also traditional manufacturing industry. The conclusion can be drawn from both cognitive and structural social capital for manufacturing agglomeration. Moreover, the marginal effect of cognitive social capital is higher than that of structural social capital, but cognitive social capital can only promote the agglomeration of manufacturing industry and high-end manufacturing industry through invention patents.(3)Social capital can promote input-output collaborative agglomeration among subsectors of the manufacturing industry, and shows the U-shaped characteristics of decreasing first and then rising. The linear regression model analysis shows that social capital can significantly promote input-output collaborative agglomeration among manufacturing industry segments, and the marginal effect of cognitive social capital is higher than that of structural social capital.According to the analysis of nonlinear regression model, social capital?cognitive capital and structural capital all show the U-shaped characteristics of the input-output collaborative agglomeration among the subsectors of manufacturing industry. The above conclusions can also be obtained by using quantile regression model. With the improvement of quantile level, the U-shaped effect of cognitive and structural social capital will gradually disappear and become a simple positive linear effect. Therefore, the accumulation of social capital should be emphasized in promoting the agglomeration of manufacturing industry. In deepening the reform to improve the formal system,we should attach importance to the construction of informal system. Finally, this paper puts forward policy Suggestions from such dimensions as cognitive social capital and structural social capital accumulation, the combination of formal and informal institutions, regional cultural construction and human capital accumulation, and the optimization of social governance system.
