There is a kind of word category in Chinese language situation called Cutting-Edge Word(CEW),such as Popular Star,He Shui Si(Death Caused By Drinking Water),and Fo Xi(Budda-like)etc.CEW was socially recognized in 2010 as a new concept.Each year,numerous CEWs emerge and 1342 CEWs were found in2016 and 2017 according to statistics.In current language situation,CEW is not a word class that generalized and scientifically defined from linguistic view.Certain related disciplines and fields such as fashion,culture,journalism and communication have paid their attention to CEW and make certain definitions.Relevant studies including Micro-Cyberculture Theory,New Shortened Word Theory and News Keyword Theory have also come along.From the perspective of linguistics,we can give a definition to CEW: It is a new word form constituted by concreteness,which characterized by distinct propagation effect in a period.Concreteness out of the other characteristics is the core factor.The components constitute CEW are concrete in ideographical expression.In other words,the meaning of a CEW is not an abstract logical generalization,but an image or a symbol which refers to the phenomenon or event.This concrete reference to phenomenon or event is the main cause for distinct propagation effect in a certain period.Even though CEW has cross or overlap scopes with Hot Word,Buzzword,Cyberword,IN Word,Fashion Word and Word Media,there are obvious differences in their natures.The CEW we discuss is a linguistic concept which is formed and developed under the internet environment.For a decade evolution,unique characteristics having appeared gradually.The configuration of its word forms and functions are of linguistic significance,which directly embody covariant relations between language and society and reflect the features and regularities of the language.The formation and developing process of CEW are not casual and isolated,but have enough external conditions and internal mechanisms.Development and popularization of internet,geometric growth of self-media and netizens' initiatives are all key objective conditions for the formation of CEW.The richness of word components in Chinese,the diversity of word formation methods and the idiom tradition which refines events and phenomenon are all significant internal mechanisms for CEW formation.CEWs are large in number and rich in categories.In word formation method,there are CEWs including:shorten-based,mix-symbol-based,meaning-extension-based,homophonic-based,foreign-language-based,old-word-based.In word creating method,there are plenty patterns,of which the rhetoric method is prominent,including: simulation,metaphor,metonymy,hyperbole,irony and homonymy.In semantic classes,there are CEWs meanings defines from the backgrounds,generalized by belonging fields or showed by sentiments.CEW spread have rules and features.From the Memetic view,CEW is a typical Language Meme,the fundamental reason of CEW spread is memes activities.CEW spread ways are mainly genotype and phenotype.Spread process can be divided into 4 stages:memes assimilation;maintain;express and spread.The results can be concluded into:strong memes,weak memes,normal memes.In language situation(especially on internet),disputes in society and academic circles are often rouse around the CEW negative effects.Negative effects refer to rules' violation of word forms and inharmonies of its spread.Therefore,critics within social opinions call for standard use of language,which reflect an object truth that people's obvious inadaptability brought by the rapid development of language situation.Although debate on academic issues is a common sense in academic circles,philologists criticize or question new-generated linguistic phenomenon with traditional norm view shall be worthy of reflection,especially in diverse language situations incorporated internet,internet of things,cloud services and big data,etc.Language is dynamic and fast-changing,not static and stagnant.Language innovation and its contradictory movements are the fundamental driving forces to push forward the development and change of languages which finally target on harmonious language situation and fulfil the increasingly needs of social communication.CEW's generation fits linguistic laws of development and is benefit to harmoniously social language situation.Large quantities of CEWs are of significant resource values.Vigorous performances of the CEWs are fresh subjects for academic researches in linguistics or other related disciplines.
