One Mind With Two Aspects

In the late Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties,the golden age of Chinese Buddhism came to an end.Meanwhile,there were many problems inside of Chinese Buddhism.Lotus Sutra School,Huayan School and Consciousness-only School disagreed with each other.Zen Buddhists didn't practice Buddhism,and problems of sectarianism had arisen.As the third master of Fayan School of Zen Buddhism,Yung-ming Yen-shou made "One Mind with Two Aspects" become the theoretical framework of Zongjing Lu.In Zongjing Lu,he collected the cream of Buddhism thoughts of Lotus Sutra School,Huayan School and Consciousness-only School,then judged them by "One Mind".Because of the sense of historical responsibility,Yen-shou had made an effort to blend Zen and Dharma together,and to merge Dharma-nature School and Dharma-character School into "One Mind" system.As a Chinese thinking model of Noumenon and Function,"One Mind with Two Aspects" shows "Thusness Aspect of the Mind" and "Phenomenon Aspect of the Mind".As two aspects of "One Mind with Two Aspects","Thusness Aspect of the Mind" and "Phenomenon Aspect of the Mind" are non-duality,they form "One Mind"together."One Mind with Two Aspects" merges Essential Nature and Characteristic,Emptiness and Existence,and shows the middle way of "One Mind".It not only has been the theoretical basis of-Chinese Buddhism,but also has a durable impact like methodology inspirations and theoretical influences on Chinese Buddhism,including Zongjing Lu.This thesis starts with Ran Yunhua's argument that "One Mind with Two Aspects" in The Awakening of Faith Sutra is considered as the theoretical framework of Zongjing Lu.Based on his argument,this thesis studied on how and why Yen-shou considered "One Mind with Two Aspects" as the theoretical framework of Zongjing Lu and how about the influences for further exploration.This thesis stated the relationship between "One Mind with Two Aspects" and Yen-shou's thoughts through the observation on the background,the problems of Chinese Buddhism and Yen-shou's life and works.And it interpreted Zongjing Lu's purport,characteristic and framework,also the intension of "One Mind with Two Aspects" and the reason that Yen-shou considered "One Mind with Two Aspects" as theoretical framework of Zongjing Lu.Furthermore,this thesis discussed the inner relationship between "One Mind with Two Aspects" and Zongjing Lu in theoretical and practical ways.In the theoretical aspect,this thesis interpreted the relationship between "One Mind with Two Aspects" and Uniformity of Zen and Sastra Theory.Yen-shou made"One Mind with Two Aspects" become the the framework of Zongjing Lu,so as to solve problems of Chinese Buddhism.As for Consciousness-only School,it began with Three Natures of perception in Yogacara,and centered at Paratantra-svabhaava,which connected Dharma-nature thoughts with Dharma-character thoughts.The framework of Parikalpita-svabhava,Paratantra-svabhaava and Parinispanna-svabhava was the same with "One Mind with Two Aspects".It expounded that Vijnaptimatrata can be explained by Three Subtle Aspects and Six Coarse Aspects in The Awakening of Faith Sutra,etc.As for Huayan School,it proved Dependent Origination of Thusness of "One Mind with Two Aspects" was the theoretical basis of Dependent Origination of Dharmadhatu.Based on this,it expounded that Six Characteristics and Ten Dharma-gate had developed the meaning of "One Mind with Two Aspects".Then it proved that "One Mind with Two Aspects" equaled the thought of No Obstruction Between Principle and Phenomena in Huayan School in thinking mode.As for Lotus Sutra School,it began with One Mind with Three Views.It explained that the View of Emptiness with Thusness Aspect of the Mind,the View of Existence with Phenomenon Aspect of the Mind,the View of Madhyamapratipad with One Mind,to prove“One Mind with Two Aspects" equal the thought of Three Views in Lotus Sutra School in thinking mode.The thoughts of Samatha and Vipasyana also equaled "One Mind with Two Aspects".Based on the the uniformity of the thoughts of Consciousness-only School,Huayan School and Lotus Sutra School,Zen and Dharma could be united theoretically.The thinking mode of Zen contained three Views of Citta-matra like Bhava,Sunya,and Madhyama-pratipad.Then the thinking mode of Zen and "One Mind with Two Aspects" were unanimous,Unity of Zen and Dharma could be possible.Yen-shou's uniting Zen and Dharma was aiming at the solution to problems of Chinese Buddhism,to observe the necessity and possibility of supplying Zen with Dharma through the framework of "One Mind with Two Aspects".Yen-shou took "One Mind with Two Aspects" as methodology mediation,to unite Zen and Dharma,and to supply Zen with the thoughts of different sects like Consciousness-only School,Huayan School and Lotus Sutra School.Practically,he created a system of "Observing the Mind" and "Making Good"by "One Mind with Two Aspects".He proved "Observing the Mind" and "Making Good" were complementary.In his opinion,"Observing the Mind and Making Good"was a practical extension of "Unity of Zen and Dharma",and a proof of "One Mind with Two Aspects" and "Sudden Enlightenment" and "Gradual Practice".Yung-ming Yen-Shou's New Idealism of "One Substance with Two Wings" was composed of"Observing the Mind and Making Good".Generally,Yung-ming Yen-shou's Zongjing Lu which epitomizes the thoughts of Chinese Buddhism is constructed by "One Mind with Two Aspects",and it shows a theoretical system of "Observing the Mind" and "Making Good" as two wings of new philosophy of the mind.Yung-ming Yen-shou's Zongjing Lu is framed with "One Mind with Two Aspects",which has settled the foundation of the structure of Chinese Buddhism,has enlightened the transformation of Chinese Philosophy from Chinese Buddhism of Sui and Tang Dynasties to Neo-Confucianism of the Song and Ming Dynasties,and can be compared with the thought of Trinity of the Scholasticism in the Middle Ages.This thesis combines logic and history,synthesis and analysis as research methods.It roughs out a theoretical framework for Zongjing Lu by "One Mind with Two Aspects".The thesis is the first theoretical experiment on Zongjing Lu from the angle of "One Mind with Two Aspects".This topic is provided with novelty and originality.Meanwhile,it pushes Ran Yunhua's argument forward for further exploration,and makes progress on the intensity of the problem of consciousness,the depth of interpretation and originality of research angle.
