This treatise focuses on the thought of all Means of Practicing Buddhist,a religious practical thought proposed by Yung-ming Yen-shou of five dynasties and early song dynasty. It gives a clear presentation to the system of Yen-shou religious practical thoughts represented by the work--Introduction to the Theory of Wan-shan Tong-Gui(Heart as the Destination of all Means of Practicing Buddhist),and makes a new survey to his thinking specialties and historical influence. From the Five Dynasties of late Tang Dynasty to early Song Dynasty,Chinese Buddhism had experienced a period of transformation. After the peak period of Sui and Tang Dynasties,it walked on a way to declination. The Theory of Wan-shan(all Means of Practicing Buddhist)proposed by Yein-shou was a treatment for the slick Chinese Buddhism repre, sented by The Chan sect, which was in a period full of shortcomings and transformation dilemma.Rooting in the Chan sect,Yen-shou inherited the thoughts of Tsung-Mi and traditions of Fayan sect, took the thoughts of Huayan as theoretical basis and overall structure, used the mode of thinking as perfect penetration without obstruction and insisted on the practice of single-mindedness proposed by the Chan sect compatible with traditions, seeking help from the Jiao Xia sect and absorbing pureland. He initiated all the ways to practice and all good deeds and showed truth from the practice which were resistances to people of the Chan sect who insisted on theories and lack of practices,as well as Fa sect people who insisted on practice and lack of theories. The purpose of Yen-shou was to regain the practice tradition of Buddhism hoping to give new blood to the vitality-losing Chinese Buddhism. It conformed the developing trend after the declination of Yi Li sect. This treatise concentrates on the method of "introspection"(philosophical methods, method of thought history etc.)and the method of external-demanding(philology method, textology method etc.).From the aspect of one's heart as the destination of all means of practicing Buddhist and all means of practicing Buddhist leading to one's heart,it includes three focuses discussing theory-practice,mental fabrication,as well as Chan and Pure Land, which involved in all Means of Practicing Buddhist.First,Yen-shou took theory-practice as the frame of all Means of Practicing Buddhist, and also "no barrier between theory and practice" served as the basis of it.Second, what the Yen-shou said about no barrier between theory and practice is to highlight the integrate harmony of single-mindedness.Third,emphasizing the uniqueness of Chan and Pure Land,as the obvious example, not only proves the normalization of all Means of Practicing Buddhist, but also realizes the single-mindedness in practice. Therefore, from this aspect,theory-practice,mental fabrication,as well as Chan and Pure Land, constitute three different level of all Means of Practicing Buddhist from inside to outside, depth to shallow and connotation to surface. The three points supplement each other and serve as the internal theories and main contents of all Means of Practicing Buddhist. All Means of Practicing Buddhism, one of the three most important parts of total Buddhism system of Yen-shou.As the realization of the system,it also is the core of the system, and have great influence on Chinese Buddhism after Song Dynasty.
