Since the Taiwan Kuomintang regime declared the Martial Law in 1987,Taiwanese society has undergone violent transformation in the political system,ideology and daily life.It is an important social change including pluralism,localization and globalization.Film as social and cultural phenomenon has become a significant medium for reconstructing Taiwanese "Imagined Community".The cinematic space not only presents landscapes of geography and substance,but also is part of social space production.It influences public consciousness through cultural representational space that is formed by space presentation,imagination and identification.Thus,Taiwanese cinematic space has reflected material and spiritual changes in Taiwanese society as a mirror,which reveals the cultural and political ecology and its operation in Taiwanese transformation period.This paper is inspired by space research of new cultural geography,emphasizing on cultural studies on the film space.On the aspect of epistemology,space is no longer as object but cultural production.Cinematic space,as media space,has great constructiveness.On the aspect of epistemology,this paper applies cultural studies as a research method to interpret the cultural representational mechanism of cinematic space.Therefore,the research relies on the cultural context of social transformation in Taiwan,and it reveals the mechanism of cinematic space production by space theory,postcolonial theory,gender theory,globalization theory,etc.This dissertation consists of six parts:The Introduction indicates the significance of the study and combs the relevant academic achievements in the theory circle.Further,this part puts forward the method and general idea of this paper.The first chapter combs "spatial turn" and its theoretical achievements in humanities and social sciences in the twentieth century.It points out the double meanings of space research in theory and method.On this basis,space research is introduced into cinematic space research and to analyze the mechanism of cinematic space representation and production.Further,this chapter summarizes the relationship between Taiwanese social transformation and cinematic space production.In the second chapter,the article discusses the pluralism in Taiwan society.Under the background of pluralism,the obscured "other" space emerges.This chapter respectively reveals Taiwanese films how to configurate China mainland space,Japanese colonial space and indigenous people's space from the national,historical and ethnic angles.Further,it provides with a perspective to probe the Taiwan subject consciousness from other space.The third chapter concerns localization of Taiwan society and its implications turn to "anti-China",which makes Taiwanese cinematic space turn to populist localization.This chapter examines Taiwan and its spacial connotation are how to be constructed in the sight of historical experience,social order and sense of place.It aims at revealing the relationship between the cinematic narrative space and Taiwan subject consciousness.The last chapter centers on globalization of Taiwanese society.It brings about global capital and goods as well as spacial experience and imagination that cross national borders.The important consequence caused by globalization is the interaction between localism and globalism.This chapter explores the meaning construction of Taipei in Taiwan films and points its characteristics of local-global cultural mixture.Second,the analysis refers to "placelessness" space production in Taiwanese horror films from the angle of global capital and goods circulation.Finally,the body space in Taiwanese films is discussed to reveal individual values and desire in the perspective from the dissemination of values on the process of globalization.The Conclusion summarizes the whole article from the perspectives of study method and content.It indicates that study on cinematic space will provide us with a new field of vision to observe the change of space production which is brought about by the great social change of Taiwan since 1987.
