The narrative space is an essential environmental element in martial arts films.Besides its function of narrative and modeling, the symbolic representation and cultural connotation sets up the unique aesthetic significance. This paper will focus on three kinds of classic narrative space in Hong Kong and Taiwanese martial arts films,i.e.inn,deserts and bamboo forest.Based on classical and typical movies in different eras, this paper will analyze visual features, styles and cultural connotations of the three kinds of narrative space in martial arts films. In my opinion, its core cultural representation consists of Oriental-style aesthetical character, the realistic portrayal of vagrant life and passion for native land, and on the other hand, the visual effect of the narrative space is embodied through obscured scene scheduling,cascading-style spatial construction and close-and-open crosscutting.Besides, combined with concrete examples of spatial management in films, the paper will research over the ways the narrative space including inn, deserts and bamboo forests, gives an impression to directors ’ conception.
