Purpose: To compare choroidal thickness measured by optical coherence tomography between subjects with ocular hypertension(OHT)and normal individuals and explore factors affecting choroidal thickness. Methods: This study included 60 untreated OHT eyes and 60 normal eyes.Choroidal thickness obtained from Cirrus HD-OCT was measured at predetermined locations in the macular and peripapillary regions and compared between the two groups before and after adjusting for potential confounding variables.Regression analysis was performed to figure out factors influencing choroidal thickness. Results: The average macular choroidal thickness was 247.40 ± 71.98 um in OHT eyes and 259.40 ± 71.90 um in the normal eyes,no significant difference was found between the two groups(t =-0.930,P = 0.354).The macular choroidal thickness did not vary significantly between OHT patients and normal controls regardless of locations(t from-1.376 to 0.372,all P > 0.05).The average peripapillary choroidal thickness was 167.42 ± 52.95 um in OHT eyes and 184.70 ± 63.07 um in the normal eyes,no significant differences were identified(t =-1.626,P = 0.107).Only one of the locations in the temporal area in OHT group demonstrated significantly thinner peripapillary choroidal thickness as compared to the normal group(t =-2.157,P = 0.033).Age was the only significant factor affecting choroidal thickness on multivariate analysis regardless of locations(from-3.387 to-1.961,all P < 0.001).Conclusions: Choroidal thickness of the macular and peripapillary regions in OHT patients is not decreased significantly except one location in the temporal area of the optic disc when comparing with the normal subjects.Anatomic peripapillary choroidal thickness measured by optical coherence tomography might be an adjunct parameter to follow-up in OHT patients.Purpose: To evaluate the quantitative characteristics of choroidal thickness in primary open-angle glaucoma(POAG),normal tension glaucoma(NTG)and normal eyes using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(SDOCT).To evaluate the diagnostic ability of choroidal thickness in glaucoma and determine the correlation between choroidal thickness and visual field parameters in glaucoma. Methods: A total of 116 subjects comprising of 40 POAG,30 NTG and 46 healthy individuals were enrolled in this study.Choroidal thickness measurements were acquired in the macular and peripapillary regions using SD-OCT.All subjects underwent white-on-white(W/W)and blue-onyellow(B/Y)visual field tests using Humphrey Field Analyzer. The Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves and area under curve(AUC)were performed to assess the discriminating power of choroidal thickness for glaucoma.Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated to assess the structure function correlation for glaucoma patients. Results: No significant differences were observed for macular choroidal thickness among different groups(all P > 0.05).With regard to the peripapillary choroidal thickness(PPCT),there were significant differences among the three groups(all P < 0.05).Post hoc tests for multiple comparisons revealed significant difference in NTG-normal comparison group(all P < 0.01).The inferior and temporal PPCT in POAG patients were significantly thinner compared to the normal eyes(P = 0.007,P = 0.002,respectively).The average PPCT in NTG patients was also thinner as compared to POAG patients(P = 0.015).Different parameters of PPCT showed significant low diagnostic value to detect POAG from normal subjects(AUC: 0.555 to 0.652),but moderate diagnostic power to detect NTG from normal subjects(AUC: 0.708 to 0.771).With regard to the diagnosis of early glaucoma, different parameters of PPCT showed relatively low diagnostic power(AUC: 0.606 to 0.698).For the all glaucoma subjects,PPCT was not significantly correlated with W/W MD(all P > 0.05),whereas PPCT showed significant correlations with B/Y MD(all P < 0.05).For the early glaucoma eyes,PPCT all showed significant correlations with W/W MD as well as B/Y MD(all P < 0.05).Conclusions: In our study, peripapillary choroidal thickness measured on OCT showed a low but statistically significant diagnostic power and significantly correlated with B/Y visual field indice in glaucoma. This may point to a potential adjunct for peripapillary choroidal thickness in glaucoma diagnosis.
