Catalog City:The Interpretation And Construction Mechanism Of Morphology From The Tradition City Gazetteers Of Jiangnan Region

In the current process of urbanization with economic development as the core,Chinese urban culture with a long history is facing the impact of the extinction of traditional spatial forms,the disregard of local traditions and the top-down homogenization operation.In contrast,the reflection on local culture and art activities and practices from local actors have aroused the author's attention to the traditional local Gazetteers,especially the city Gazetteers of Jiangnan that carry rich traditional urban culture.Such documents not only contain a large number of historical information directly related to the local areas,but also contain the historical information of the local areas.The city objects involved also include units at various levels,such as prefectures,counties,townships and villages,outside the capital city.This paper attempts to explore the theoretical and practical significance of urban historical tradition and local uniqueness in the study of current spatial form based on Jiangnan City Gazetteers.Although in recent years,Chinese and foreign scholars,mainly historians,have carried out researches on the relationship between local Gazetteers and historical urban space,most of them remain in the restoration work of historical cities.On the other hand,the design research from the perspective of urban Gazetteers has not yet taken shape,but taking the organization of knowledge elements in the text as the structural thinking of urban space has gradually become the consensus direction.This paper will continue the exploration of structural thinking,and the core of the discussion will be on the compilation method of urban Gazetteers,"Catalog ",which is shown as the dynamic relationship between knowledge and text: The editors classify and annotate the collected knowledge,and then integrate it by copying,revising,adjusting,adding and deleting,and then edit it into a book.Aim at this article is not to restore city reference meaning of history and philology,but set up in the west after the linguistic turn of structuralism semiotics,semantics as the background,on the basis of urban studies and architecture theory angle of view,will be treated as "Catalog" the city of knowledge element as the process of reading and construct the spatial form of linguistic "mechanism".It shows that the author constructs the basic type framework of the city by cataloging the diverse urban experiences in the way of cataloging methods of "hierarchy" and "equal",and forms an open field under the multi-semantic meaning of experience type,which guides the intervention and interaction of different individuals.The intertextual interpretation and organization of elements are carried out by means of transcription,modification,adjustment,continuation and deletion,which expand the knowledge of existing types of elements and reorganize them into a new framework,thus realizing the temporary integrity and sustained stability of urban space in the iterative replacement.The "experience collection","basic reference","interventional interaction" and "recombination and change",which are concluded from this process,represent the operating mode of Catalog mechanism.In this paper,such as Nanjing,Suzhou jiangnan city as an example,shows the mechanism that how the operation pattern,on the basis of through "orientation","distribution","mixed" and "wrong" stack,"fabric" five kinds of forms of experience the involvement of the textual and interaction,and rediscover the literary style,the relationship between the historical reality and perceptual experience,Through the reading and interpretation of the materials,the potential spatial form behind the text of the city Gazetteers is constructed.The textual nature of the Catalog mechanism can also be analogous to the perceptual experience of urban experiencers.The reproduction of urban space becomes the mutual dialectical between object image and abstraction,and the object identity of the city also becomes the subject of interaction in the process of experiencer's cognition,which makes the understanding of urban history transferred to the classification process of the place.The type elements of different time and space are constructed in the open field and derived and changed in the interaction of different individuals.Whether it is a city with historical traces or a whiteboard site without historical context,the self-sufficiency of the operation mode of Catalog mechanism has the same enlightenment significance for the practice of contemporary urban architecture.Through the interpretation of three urban architectural practice cases of the Xiangshan campus of China Academy of Arts by Mr.Wangshu,Jiading micro block design by Mr.Yungho Chang,and Chengdu West village·Basis yard by Mr Liu Jiakun,this paper shows how to discover and extract the potential type basis of practice cases through the Catalog mechanism with subject intervention.And how the elements of different disciplines such as mountain,water,wall,doors and windows,courtyard,road,canal and fair-faced concrete expand and relate in the form of experience,forming parallel juxtaposition related to the perceived experience of the place.On the other hand,the Catalog mechanism means that the architect is also the experiencer,and the personal label identity and absolute formal meaning are abandoned,and the underlying principles are presented as an encyclopedic spatial form instead.As an interpretation and construction mechanism of spatial form from the perspective of jiangnan city,"Catalog City" refuses to give a single explanation and form to urban spatial form,and at the same time tries to make up for the lack of context and identifiable of modernist cities.By transforming the tradition of urban Gazetteers from a fixed concept of heritage into an open discourse and design strategy of current significance,the urban spatial form that is connected with the place and full of continuous creativity is established.
