Abstract/Summary:
This report presents a survey of the author's internship experience with Baylor Biomedical Services (BBS) during the period August 15, 1989 through December 30, 1989 and the period January 16, 1991 through August 30, 1991. The one year internship is a part of the Doctorate of Engineering degree requirements. The internship allowed the author to be involved in the different professional activities performed at Baylor Biomedical Services and to work in the various departments of the company.;The objective of the internship was to perform identifiable technical contributions to the rehabilitation department of the internship firm by developing medical devices based on new engineering technologies. In addition, the author's three major personal objectives were: the orientation to professional engineering consulting, the development of technical knowledge and skills, and the development of managerial skills. The objectives were achieved through work performed as a biomedical and clinical engineer and projects assigned as a rehabilitation engineer.;The achievement of the stated objectives is documented throughout the four major parts of this report. Part one of the report presents the internship company describing its organizational structure as well as its internal departmental structure. It also points out the various tasks of the intern that allow him to meet his objectives.;The three other parts of the report present three different Environmental Control Unit (ECU) designs built at BBS. ECU's allow the paraplegic patient, or the patient suffering from cerebral palsy or other type of paralysis, to be able to control, through a simple switch fitted to his/her capabilities, devices such as television controls, bed controls, light, phone, nurse call, etc. ECU's offer the choice to the disabled to be independent. The author's contribution to these projects is pointed out throughout the report.
