Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to assess perceptions about the competencies recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery (1982) for undergraduate Information Systems curricula in order to make recommendations for Information Systems curricula in four-year colleges. The assessment was based upon the responses of 44 managerial and 67 entry-level non-managerial computer professionals employed by five randomly selected organizations in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. The data were analyzed using percentages, analysis of variance and Stuart's tau-c.; Research question one which asked, "Do managerial computer professionals perceive that entry-level non-managerial computer professionals employed by their organizations possessed the competencies recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery when hired?" was answered negatively. Research question two which asked, "Do entry-level non-managerial computer professionals perceive that they possessed the competencies recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery when they were hired?" was answered affirmatively.; Research question three which asked, "Do managerial computer professionals perceive the competencies recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery to be important for entry-level non-managerial computer professionals employed by their organizations?" was answered negatively. Research question four which asked, "Do entry-level non-managerial computer professionals perceive the competencies recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery to be important in their work?" was answered negatively.; Research question five which asked, "Are there differences in the perceptions of the possession of the competencies recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery when the entry-level non-managerial computer professionals were hired between managerial computer professionals and entry-level non-managerial computer professionals when grouped by job related characteristics?" was answered negatively. Research question six which asked, "Are there differences in the perceptions of the importance of the competencies recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery between managerial computer professionals and entry-level non-managerial computer professionals when grouped by job related characteristics?" was answered negatively.
