Abstract/Summary:
With the assistance of object-oriented programming and hypermedia technology, this intelligent event-driven medical information system for stroke (IMIS-Stroke) displays integrated images and text to train medical students and house staff about the vascular anatomy of the brain and symptoms produced by stroke. These technologies enhance the system with referential links between text and pictures in an integrated learning environment. A friendly graphical user interface running in a window environment enables the system to provide an efficient and natural method to access information about stroke and its effects on the brain.;In this research project, we implemented a window-based desktop training tool by displaying medical images in an intelligent medical information system. Two intelligent database management tools offer a convenient method for domain experts to maintain the knowledge data by contextual indexing method. Object-oriented programming (OOP) technology saves design time and makes it efficient to maintain a large and complex system.;KnowledgePro is a reliable asset to the design and development of this project with its combination of hypermedia, expert system, and OOP. Various event-driven search routines in this project offer multiple ways to access the desired medical information. Contextual data indexing methods speed up retrieval from external databases and also enhances the performance of the system. Highlighting medical images with colors and text increases the readability of the system for the user.;The IMIS-Stroke system was designed as a tool for teaching the vascular anatomy of the brain. An evaluation of its performance by medical professionals showed IMIS-Stroke to be a reliable system with high educational value. This system offers a clear and deep understanding of the vascular anatomy of the brain and the causes and symptoms of stroke supported by colored medical images.
