Process management as a tool for school administrator

Abstract/Summary:
The main focus of the research was directed at exploring the managerial practices commonly used by Detroit public schools and examining the feasibility of improving the effectiveness of management through the use of Process Management techniques. It is the feeling of the researcher and scholarly writers that educational processes can be improved by utilizing proven management concepts that have brought much success to private businesses.;The participants in the research were five Focus Groups of administrators and five teachers from Detroit schools that took part in Face-to-Face Interviews. These participants provided data for the study by answering questions contained on the Ten Question Survey Instrument. A Historical Research was also conducted to acquire information about current managerial practices used by Detroit schools.;The Findings of the research indicated that the administrators and the teachers were interested in seeing Process Management techniques implemented in Detroit schools. There were several similarities in the ideas and expectations of teachers and administrators as to the benefits education will gain from using techniques associated with Process Management. Among their key expectations of teachers and administrators as to the benefits education will gain from using techniques associated with Process Management. Among their key expectations were improved managerial skills, more emphasis placed on team work within the organization and savings of money and time through greater efficiency within the organization. Both groups, administrators and teachers, indicated that Process Management can be an effective management tool and should be implemented in Detroit schools. The researcher was somewhat surprise at first of the level of knowledge some of the teachers had about Process Management. Further investigation exposed that two of the teachers had recently worked in management positions in private businesses before becoming teachers and had worked with various aspects of Process Management techniques.
