Abstract/Summary:
This study examined the impact that the Transition Center in Hoke County in NC has for the community it serves and how it meets the unique needs of families for whom English is not their first language. Immigrant families, especially those who have no knowledge of the English language, may not know how to interact with the school system because they are not used to it. Parents new to the county normally use their knowledge to navigate through the school system, but in many instances their previous knowledge is not enough to inform them about the services that they are entitled to. Newcomer centers, welcome centers, or transition centers, as they all may be called, allow these families to interact with a school system that is designed to help every child regardless of his race, color, national origin, sex, or age.
