Abstract/Summary:
This study prepared a written history through records and statistics of the women's sports in the Southeastern Conference from 1973-82. In addition, this study attempted to answer the following questions: (1) What sports were played by the women athletes at the member institutions of the Southeastern Conference? (2) What records and statistics existed for women's sports in each school in the conference? (3) Where were the records and statistics kept at each school, and how did one gain access to them? (4) What personnel existed in the member schools who were responsible for accumulating these records and statistics? (5) Was all the information, which compiled the records and statistics in each sport, available at the member schools of the conference? (6) Were there models for the presentation of the records and statistics in each sport and for a conference media guide?;Over the 10-year period, the women's teams have competed in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, swimming/diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track/field, and volleyball.;Numerous records existed for each sport at the member schools. A listing of the categories composing the history included: (1) Overall win-loss records by team and by coach. (2) Intraconference win-loss records. (3) All-American, All-Region, and All-State selections. (4) Athletes who have been selected to national teams. (5) Results of AIAW state, regional, and national championships. (6) Results of NCAA Championships. (7) Individual national champions. (8) Results of Southeastern Conference Championships. Each sport has records and statistics which are specific to that sport.;Most of the information about the sports was taken from media guides printed by the sports information office at the individual member schools. In some cases, the actual result of the competition served as the source. Newspaper accounts, school yearbooks, and coaches' files provided some information. There were gaps in the information in some sports and categories, because the information may not have been researched at the individual school or the results of the actual competition were unobtainable.;The records and statistics of the nine sports compiled the history in 585 tables.;The presentation of the sport's statistics was the common categories established by sports reporters, sports information directors, and/or coaches throughout the years. These categories were considered the standard accepted presentation of records and statistics in the various sports.
