Abstract/Summary:
Parent involvement in their child's therapy has been approached in multiple ways, and the present evaluation explored the literature for four evidence-based approaches: positive parenting program (Triple P), parent child interaction therapy (PCIT), Incredible Years, and trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT). Following exploration of the strengths and weakness of these evidence-based approaches, the primary investigator completed a needs assessment regarding a parent component to supplement a successful child group psychotherapy program at a private practice in Kentucky. Results supported development of a unique, six session parenting group for the elementary age group titled Parent Connection (PCON). PCON aims to provide psychoeducation and also incorporates process into the format for the one hour collateral parent group. PCON seeks to enhance the outcome for the child through applying parenting curriculum for three primary areas: brain integration, self-care, and parent-child connection. The structure of the program and implications for practice are discussed. In fitting with the local clinical scientist model (Stricker & Trierweiler, 2006), the need from a specific population was utilized in combination with the evidence-base to produce a clinical product well-suited for application.
