The relationship between time management behaviors and ministerial effectiveness among ministers of education in the state of Texas

Research has presented time management behavior as valuable to leaders. The current study examined the relationship between time management behaviors and ministerial effectiveness among ministers of education in the state of Texas. No research combining these two variables had been conducted among clergy. This non-experimental, quantitative, correlational study examined 97 ministers of education in Southern Baptist Churches affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT). The Time Management Behavior (TMB) developed by Macan (1994) was used to assess behaviors critical to time management activities and perceptions, and the Ministerial Effectiveness Inventory (MEI) developed by Majovski (1982) was used to assess ministerial effectiveness. The current study found significant positive relationships between ministerial effectiveness and time management behaviors. Additionally there was a positive correlation between ministerial effectiveness and the time management subscales: goal setting and prioritizing, and mechanics of time. The data from the current study suggested ministers of education who practiced time management behaviors, excluding preference for organization, had a higher tendency toward ministerial effectiveness. The results of the current study warrant future studies to examine the predictive qualities of clergy leadership, time management behaviors and ministerial effectiveness, among other possible variables that may affect the relationship among time management behaviors and ministerial effectiveness.
