Target Reader. This manuscript addresses the following target readers: (1) the researcher, (2) the design educator, (3) the architectural historian, (4) the design professional, (5) the architecture student, (6) the design student, (7) the design critic, and (8) the lay reader.;The designs are placed in their proper historical perspective by consideration of their technical, aesthetic, political, economic, philosophical, sociological, psychological, and environmental contexts. Physical appearances and features of the works are described and related to periods appropriate to the schools, styles, and movements in history. Wherever possible, significant designs are examined in terms of their original program or parameters, and with recognition of external influences. More than fifty different correlations are made to show how one important builtform has influenced the designer of a new and different builtform. Design-oriented paintings, sculpture, and forms of natural phenomena are a part of the study, as are people, events, places, inventions, and publications, whenever they have made a contribution to the direction of contemporary design.;Individual analyses with the illustrations provide a new insight into visual equations. Each of the seven hundred black and white photographic plates in the manuscript is accompanied by the following information: (1) the name of the design, (2) the name of the designer, (3) the location (city) or manufacturer, (4) the location (country of site) or of manufacturer, and (5) the year of completion.;Purpose and Approach. The purpose of the book is four-fold: (1) to increase perceptual awareness, (2) to stimulate an appreciation of man-made forms, (3) to aid in the comprehension of modern architecture and industrial design, and (4) to present a method for the evaluation of builtform within the designscape.;A Project in Lieu of Dissertation. The project is in the form of a completed manuscript for a reference book on the history of modern architecture and its relationship to the man-made environment. Specifically, there has been a conscious effort to integrate the history of contemporary architecture and the history of industrial design. Furthermore, the manuscript is a visual history, international in scope, which illustrates, chronologically, the important designs of the first eighty years of the twentieth century.;The manuscript is divided into sections. Section one is a review of ancient designs and influences. Section two discusses the relevance of designs in the pre-1900 period. The main body of the study is a builtform chronology, subdivided by decades: the initial period is titled "Turn of the Century, 1900-1909" and includes the significant designs of that ten year period of history; the other sequential decades include "The Teens, 1910-1919" through "The Eighties, 1980-.".;Following the chronology are the designs of three special categories: (1) "The Year 2000 and Beyond," a look at the future; (2) "Non Design," an examination of forms which have violated the accepted principles of design, and (3) "Builtform on the Landscape," an analysis of the built environment which is not a part of either architecture or industrial design.;The manuscript contains four appendices: (1) a Builtform Evaluation Model, the purpose of which is to create a system for the evaluation of excellence in architecture and industrial design on the basis of an identical set of criteria, (2) Select Biographies of architects and industrial designers, (3) a Glossary, containing the specialized language of design, and (4) a Major Invention List, noting discoveries from the past which have had a positive affect on modern design.;Finally, a comprehensive bibliography is offered, featuring a selection of the most important books on the subjects of contemporary architecture and design.
