Abstract/Summary:
Development of macroalgal cultivation has traditionally followed a predictable domestication course or model. Available and utilizable macroalgae were discovered, collected and enhanced by "management," "husbandry" and "full cultivation" in that order. The domestication examples of Porphyra, Laminaria and Undaria in the Orient follow this model very well. However, the latter stages in the domestication of the two brown macroalgae, Laminaria and Undaria, were particularly impacted by previous experience and moden scientific methods.;Applying these lessons to the American situation is a logical step for the future. Potential markets for macroalgae produced in the United States exist. The techniques of any domestication stage can be developed with scientific research and technological development. The stage chosen must be consistent with the demand level for that macroalgal product. In any case, there are a series of strategies learned from the Oriental examples being implemented by innovative American researchers which should facilitate the development of successful macroalgal cultivation in the United States as well.;The development of the Porphyra industry best followed the model. The domestication stages followed in order and each stage was clearly represented. The domestication of Undaria and Laminaria in Japan bypassed husbandry and went directly to full cultivation, because the life history is unclear, full cultivation has been elusive, Macrocystis is only harvested on a large scale from managed populations.
