The present work is a narrative account of the history of photography in Arizona from the early 1860's to 1912. Photographic technology and trends are superimposed over the backdrop of local history to create a setting for a chronological progression of biographical vignettes of selected photographers both famous and obscure. Reclaiming their lives entailed the use of a variety of primary and secondary sources from the fields of history, art, science and popular culture. As the first scholarly effort of any scope on Arizona photographers, the text is dually designed to recapture an elusive part of the state's past and to stimulate further research in the field. |
