Abstract/Summary:
This study focused on the lived experience of seven recovering physicians from a dual diagnosis of a substance use disorder and a mental illness. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the lived experiences of physicians who are recovering from a dual diagnosis of a substance use disorder and a mental illness. An exploratory qualitative phenomenological methodology guided the individual face-to-face interviews. The study sample was recruited using a purposive and snowball sampling method. The researcher used an interview guide to conduct seven interviews with recovering dually diagnosed physicians. Data collection included individual semi-structured interviews using open-ended questions. Six of the seven interviews were audio taped and each interview was transcribed verbatim for analysis. Content analysis was used to identify and interpret the main themes and sub-themes from the interview. Bandura's social learning theory provided the theoretical framework for the analysis of the themes. Descriptive data from the study suggested that mental illness was viewed negatively and medical organizations had stereotypical ideas in relation to mental health issues. Each of the physicians described personal narratives of dual diagnosis as living hell. 12-Step group participation was helpful in remaining abstinent and a major factor for sustaining recovery. Participants viewed peer support as mostly non-existent, but contributed that factor to a lack of education on dual diagnosis within the healthcare field. All the participants agreed PHPs were helpful. In summary, this study may have increased awareness of the recovery experience of physicians dually diagnosed with a substance use disorder and a mental illness. Future recommendations and implications for research are presented.
