This dissertation examined best practices for the transition into adulthood pertaining to individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Federal legislation has mandated support programs for individuals with disabilities to support successful employment and independence; however, as of 2012, the majority of individuals with autism were unemployed or underemployed, attended postsecondary institutions at much lower rates than their peers, and very few lived independently. A comprehensive review of the literature was conducted, as were semi-structured interviews with leadership of established transition programs. This dissertation gleaned information on what the field was using to support individuals with autism. A grounded theory analysis of factors contributing to success, limiting factors, needs, and recommendations for improvements were discussed. |
