Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the continuing and changing aspects of attachment in three marriages impacted by traumatic brain injury (TBI). Couples engaged in 2 semi-structured interviews and a final follow up interview as well as completed the Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised Questionnaire. Additional information regarding the TBI and participant demographics was gathered. Interpretive phenomenological analysis of this data produced four major categories, twelve themes, and 26 associated subthemes. This study described the enduring aspects of attachment as well as the reorganization strategies used by these three couples. Implications for the medical field and family therapists were discussed with a goal of encouraging resiliency in this population through targeted interventions.
