Abstract/Summary:
Organizational environment constructs were examined for convergence and divergence. Constructs explored were climate, adaptational culture, and ideational culture. Correlation matrices, factor analysis, and canonical correlation were applied to pairings of the three constructs. The results of the analyses suggest that climate and adaptational culture are convergent, climate and ideational culture are divergent, and adaptational and ideational culture are divergent. The underlying difference between divergent constructs appears to be that climate and adaptational culture are conceptually and operationally confined to dimensions determined a priori, whereas ideational culture permits the dimensions to emerge from within the organization. The findings have implications for Lewin's (1951) theory that behavior is a function of the person (P) and their environment (E) or B = f (P,E).
