Abstract/Summary:
Corporate social and environmental responsibility (CSER) have been topics of increasing interest to researchers across academic disciplines. As a field of study within the discipline of industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology, however, it still remains in a nascent stage. Moreover, CSER has only recently been studied from the perceptions of employees. The predominant resource has been at the organizational level or from the perspective of customers and external stakeholders. The purpose of the current study is to add to the fledgling body of research on the topic by investigating employee perceptions of corporate responsibility and the impact these perceptions have on work-related outcomes. More specifically, employee perceptions of corporate responsibility were compared with the values that organizations held with respect to social and environmental behavior. The researcher hypothesized that the compatibility or fit between employee and organizational perceptions would exhibit a positive relationship with job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and employee engagement.;The current research consists of two parts, a qualitative pilot-study and a quantitative Main Study. Results from the Pilot Study revealed that participants differed in how they prioritized the facets of corporate responsibility (employee, customer, environmental, community, shareholder, and ethical) In the Main Study, an exploratory factor analysis conducted on the employee-centric CR Fit Scale identified a six factor structure. In addition, hierarchical linear regressions were conducted to determine the unique variance that CR fit had on work outcomes above and beyond person-organizational fit. While the regression analyses were not significant, CR fit did have a moderately positive relationship with environmental responsibility. These finding and their implications were discussed.
