Abstract/Summary:
A model of perceived family discrimination was tested on a sample of 498 employees. The impact of family supportive organization perceptions, family supportive supervisors, and family supportive benefit availability on perceived family discrimination was examined as well as employee and organizational outcomes associated with this form of workplace discrimination. Employees were less likely to perceive family discrimination in organizations with family supportive organization perceptions and family supportive supervisors. Family supportive organization perceptions or the global beliefs employees form regarding the extent to which the organization is family supportive had the strongest impact on perceived family discrimination. Perceived family discrimination was also associated with lower job satisfaction, lower organizational attachment, higher intentions to turnover, higher work-family conflict, and lower benefit usage.
