Abstract/Summary:
The study explores translating the scholar-librarian partnership of Jaroslav Pelikan in The Idea of the University A Reexamination into a functioning reality. Drawing on John Dewey's exploration of logic and inquiry, Barney G. Glaser and Anselm L. Strauss's work with grounded theory, and Everett M. Rogers's analysis of diffusion of innovation and information, the study explores the interactive issues of scholar effectiveness and the subordinate place of librarians within higher education.; Existing library and information science, higher education, and diffusion literature contributed to the development of a first-generation "Draft Research Model of the Research University Library." The qualitative model was pretested with 100 Ohio University researchers in November 1994. In January 1995, a nearly identical version was mailed to 171 chief academic officers, library directors/deans, and program heads at the 50 American and 7 Canadian institutions of higher education with a program of library and information studies accredited by the American Library Association. A follow-up mailing took place in February 1995. 74 responses were received by March 30, 1995. 52 were usable replies--an effective response rate of 30%.; Analysis of responses reveals a wide range of reactions to the draft model. A number support the model; a plurality question such aspects as (a) cost, (b) lack of emphasis on electronic information, (c) reliance on librarians with subject doctorates, and (d) increased librarian involvement in the research effort.; Based on survey responses and other data, a "Second Generation Research Library Model" has been developed. This version continues the stress on the development of peer or near-peer relationships between librarians and faculty researchers, but concentrates on equipping librarians with interdisciplinary doctorates to assist with inter-disciplinary and cross-specialty questions. The revised version recognizes the value of a doctorate from a variety of administrative sciences for academic administrators.
