Abstract/Summary:
In this dissertation, we propose a novel printed antenna design with a uniaxially anisotropic cover layer to suppress or eliminate surface-wave radiations. In a conventional design, a printed antenna is fabricated on a grounded-substrate structure where at least one surface-wave mode can be supported. Power loss into the surface-wave modes can cause low antenna radiation efficiency and increased mutual coupling between adjacent printed elements, making such conventional design inefficient and undesirable.;We analyze the design configuration to study the dependence of the surface-wave behaviors as well as the related antenna radiation characteristics on the parameters of the substrates. The surface-wave suppression condition is established by using the transverse resonance technique. The required design conditions and useful practical guidelines are discussed.
