Abstract/Summary:
Powered by the magnificent success of the Internet, wireless networks are currently undergoing an evolution toward their third generation. The third generation wireless services will include Internet access to interactive multimedia and video conferencing as well as traditional services such as voice, email and web access. Creating a system that successfully combines both multimedia and wireless technologies requires the solution of many challenging technical issues. One of the most important issues is the creation of a charging and resource control scheme suitable for wireless environment that charges customers fairly according to the Quality of Service (QoS) that they receive.; Existing wireless charging and resource control schemes are not suitable for next generation networks since they have been designed and optimized to support circuit switched voice and low bitrate data calls only. At the same time, several deficiencies have been identified in the currently proposed wireless and wireline QoS based resource control schemes.; In this research we propose a novel QoS aware I&barbelow;ntegrated C&barbelow;harging and R&barbelow;esource C&barbelow;ontrol (ICRC) framework that can efficiently manage next generation wireless networks. The proposed framework charges customers fairly using a new QoS-based charging model. It improves the resource allocation efficiency by allocating resources to customers based on their QoS requirement. It gives service providers the flexibility to select and/or implement ICRC policies that best fit their needs. Finally, the proposed framework utilizes a new reservation-less handoff scheme.
