Abstract/Summary:
Traditional college-level instruction in engineering embodies lecture, homework, lab, multiple test and examination. Research in learning science demonstrates that new technology can significantly improve teaching and learning. To take advantage of these benefits, the online homework system was developed to enhance teaching and learning in engineering. The main strengths of this system are its ability to give immediate feedback to students, to generate interactive graphics, and to facilitate authoring tools for instructors. The main objective of the research is to investigate possible effects of using the online homework system in a problem-based learning environment in engineering education via experiments, conducted in engineering courses.; In general, results of this study shows that using the online homework system could successfully improve students' learning efficiency. However, it also suggests different ways to enhance teaching and learning in engineering education. In this dissertation, the architecture of the online homework system and the results of the experiments are described.
