| Scope and method of study. A career in teaching has been labeled as a “flat career,” yet this qualitative research study demonstrates teaching as a career of “limitless” opportunities even for teachers who desire to stay in the classroom. Case studies of eight OSUWP TC's were used to gain more understanding and knowledge about the career directions of active Oklahoma State University Writing Project (OSUWP) teacher consultants and the influence of the OSUWP upon these teachers' career directions, and what teacher professionalism is to these teachers. Surveys were mailed to all members from years 1992 to 2000, a total of 148. From the returned sixty-four surveys, criteria was set to determine the number of interviewees for the topical interview. The purposive sample met the criteria of attending six OSUWP activities each year since becoming an OSUWP TC. Observations of classrooms and of interviewees' teaching were made when possible. From this study, OSUWP TC's revealed a common understanding for the definition of “educator” and “teacher career.”; Findings and conclusions. Themes emerging from the qualitative research involved the need for teachers to have professional career opportunities in education, opportunities to be teacher leaders in their districts and school sites, and an understanding of what teacher professionalism is and the need to model this understanding. A new professional development model has been proposed to meet the needs of teachers and the demand for systemic change in professional development for educators. |
